Re: plot hounds
i never understand guys lookin for grit over speed track drivin shuts them down seen labs hounds curs and everything else run hogs and a fast bay dog is better than a gritty dog and you dont have to bring a staple gun and spend all ya money on vet bills
a lab can shut a hog down but have never seen or heard of a lab treein bears in a legal area not a park in PA or NJ a house cat can treem there they donthave the speed or endurance to run bears i think you guys should be lookin for bear dogs or there is a few guys catchin coyotes with plotts they have to be the fastest plotts out there but to each his own i guess but you gotta stoppem first li freediver

Re: plot hounds
If you live in FL I would look up Roy Stiles in NC he has outstanding Plott bear and hog dogs. An old Plott man that I respect, Bill Reddick, said Stiles has some of the best in the country. Currently, Bill ownes the number 1, and 3 reproducing Plott studs and number 5 female. When Bill sent me to a man that said he couldn't hunt some Plotts out of Roy's dogs I bought all three he owned.
Stiles is the American Plott Association President. The Dec issue of Full Cry mentions the success he is having this bear season. Just my two cents.

Re: plot hounds
i will agree with contacting mr stiles but, there are several others out there who would also have what your looking for. if your looking for just plain grit look for crockett bred dogs but most that are super aggressive can't smell there feed unless you find stock dating back to pre grey boy before the bull dog. yea i know i'm going to tick some ppl off that do not want to acknowledge thr mix. but and will get to as close to the exact comment as i can, i'm getting to dang old and need to get these critters stopped a lil faster so i added a lil extra stopping power. dogs that are pups or grand pups to wendts harley are real nice also bill hicks dogs that go to smokey mountain smoky ( star mtn bred) are also real nice. roy clarks dogs and if you can find any of it find some cascade bred dogs. i have wendt harley(pure weems) blood here also hicks smokey mtn smokey blood and two cascade dogs with just a touch of roy clark. berry tartelton's white hollow plotts would also be a god choice. any of the walker brothers( vernon, norman or curtis) yes i left one out. would be a nice choice last one would be bluff creek. those are what i suggest in my unproffesional opinion.

Re: plot hounds
Plottpapaw mentioned all the lines that would make you a good one. As someone new to Plotts but spent more time and research than I would care to mention and don't feel like an expert but all those are the ones most like for grit, nose and don't skip intellegence. The mistake I made was not getting enough dogs to start with (I am sure sure someone has a one dog show but I would think their life would be short or would cost a lot) a good two or three would be the way to go. I am still learning more about hog hunting and always looking for good dogs.

Re: plot hounds
dpetty, in my opinion research leads to better ability to train, breed and raise great plotts. i might also suggest talking to ol timers of the breed. i have been fortunate enough to have had several conversations with a few exceptional breeders and big game hunters. i will post next litter i have. i give the majority of my puppies to ppl inside our hunting group and then ppl who will hunt them hard and give me an honest report card.

Re: plot hounds
Lifreediver , I have never said to myself boy I wish I had faster dogs they would have treed that bear . I do not have FAST dogs but they are average to just above.
I have had blistering fast dogs before and know that when I was missing bears that would STOP( bay solid ) or tree .
Slow dogs are junk but dogs that are average speed on track are going to catch bout anything catch able if they make contact. You guys that think a gritty dog is just vet bills make me laugh. There are dogs out there that have the grit and brains to make hard contact with little or no price to be paid on a frequent basis . And this goes for all breeds not just plotts.
I have seen WAY to many fast dogs make a race go all day for lack of contact when my dogs who are not as fast on track will stop or tree the same bears being ran in just a short jump.
I had a chocolate lab/Chesapeake that treed many bears .
Speed is nice and chest thumpimg flashy but absolutely no replacement for the top tier of what a bear dog is . A top tier real beardog has the speed grit endourance and mental toughness . to many good to decent dogs are judged by speed alone what a mistake that brings the average of a true bear dog down.

Re: plot hounds
here are your basics. its got to want to go, got to be able to run it down, got to have the guts to lay fang to butt and lastly got to have the heart to stay and stick til daddy shows up with the bang still. i will add this with no pressure it aint gonna stop and aint no dog gonna run a bear or a hog to death. i bear hunt, some hog, bobcat. the dogs that run and don't at the minimum pinch don't get there meals here. i listed the stocks i did because i consider them to be bred for a complete well balanced line that covers all attributes listed.

Re: plot hounds
It seems that everyone always has an opinion about grit in a dog.
I can tell you after 20 plus years of hunting plotts and walkers, each had their own style of doing it.
If you read my story about my "Sounder" Walker dog you will see I did not need a fast dog to catch bears. Sounder would stay with a track until he had it run down to a walk. He would wait till he had a chance at bear ass and then he would just get him some. I once tried to grab him at the tree as a bear was sliding down the tree, he would jump up and hamstring him. Once he got pulled 25 feet up in the tree still hanging on bear butt.
But this was by no means the best of my dogs, I had several walkers dogs out of Carl Horner`s Walkers, (Brother and Sister to Carl`s "Partner" Dog) that would really pull hair and work as a pack.
But my Go Buddy Plott was by far the best dog I was ever in the woods with, he could do it all. Sometimes if I had a bad bear run off in some big canyon and tree? I knew sometimes it would be real late getting to him in the dark, so I just left him overnight. I remember one time in California, he treed at dark so I left him. I checked on him several hours later in the night he had moved a couple miles and was treed again. The next morning he was still treed solid, 14 hours later. It took 4 more hours to drive around cutting roads to get closer to him before we walked in. Go Buddy was so happy to see us, we brought water to him.
Buddy did not need a kill, just a good pat, kind words and he would do it all over again.
Dave Williams, Salmon Idaho had some outstanding bear dogs that would really get after a bear real nice. He bred his best Plott bitch to Buddy
Richard Smith, Salmon Idaho had some outstanding Plott dogs too.
Randy Shuff, Salmon Idaho (Lemhi Idaho) had some of my Go Buddy Plotts that really did well for him on bear and lion. He bred his best bitch to Buddy
The only Go Buddy bloodlines left out of these outstanding Plotts is in Pocatello, Idaho

Re: plot hounds
Kevin Hall and the Nabek (Larry Fogul ) lines carry the most salmon river blood out there . the two people larry and kevin seem to have a little different Salmon river blood but they are the place to go with the most up close salmon river dogs.

Re: plot hounds
Tom if your looking for plott hog dogs your best bet would be getting them from a hog hunter that has been doing it sucessfully for some time. Mike Cauley in Louisiana would be the first person I would talk too...

Re: plot hounds
@Maddoglures, I have had two dogs out of Randy Shuff's place. Both super smart, easy to handle, crazy fast and extremely gritty dogs. My Bullseye dog out of one of Randy's gyps (don't remember her name right off) was sired by JD Scribner's Ni**er dog. IMHO those Scribner dogs are right up there as the best available and they are mostly Salmon River bred from Dr Smith's stock. One of JD's dads dogs got in a rolling fight with a 150 lb blackbear and killed it.
