hog calls

Postby dpetty » Mon Jan 24, 2011 4:04 pm

No jokes on this one. I have some young dogs and really want to put them on hot tracks to get them going. I thought if I could call one in with one of the hog calls I am looking at that would help me get them a hot track and keep them from trashing. Hogs are scattered in my area so I thought this might help. Farmers don't want hogs so putting out hog attractant would not go well. I use to call fox and coon and feel comfortable with calls just didn't know if anyone had tried this before.

Ive heard a lot about hog calls. I cant say Ive heard anything good. Just an idea, how about setting up a hog trap? Catch one, hobble it. Train the dogs on it?

I thought about that we are past the bay point we need a good run in a situation where the hog is in the wild. Thanks.

There's an article in the Jan. 2011 Fur-Fish-Game about calling boars by Judd Cooney which talks about a guy from Decatur (North Texas), Glenn Guess.
It might be online at FFG, I have not checked.

Do some mock hunts with a small hog and a rope with a stick tied to its leg so it wont go far in the woods, the stick will get hung up the the brush. Thats how I start all my young dogs, never had pup in a bay pen before, seen to many get bad habits from the pens.

I read the article that was why I thought it might work. I also like the idea of the hog on the rope but we are at the point of a wild hog. I was just trying to put the young dogs in a situation where I know the hog is close and it is a very hot track. It was just an idea. Always thinking of new ways to work with youngs dogs.

Glen was on Texas Boars and he said he called in 7 one night or day and him and the man that owned Texas Boars got into a argument and [Owner saying it didn't work Glen saying it did] and Glen got kicked off.I don't know, but Glen and his wife are hunters,I mean top notch. he is on Call Predators. His wife shoots a 243 and she can bust a hog running full bore.
