Do you catch and hobble your hogs or do you stick them?

Postby heeler3 » Wed Sep 08, 2010 7:39 am

Personally i catch and hobble my hogs because we have a buyer that buys every hog i catch from me so i have a good reason to keep them alive. The only time i use my knife is when we get in a bind or get a dog cut up and need to do a little stitchin. And most of the time ill turn a pregnant sow go. What do yall boys do?

well here in arkansas the only thing my knife gets used on is cotton mouths. every once in a while when the weather is nice and cool i ll stick a couple of boar hogs to stick in the freezers of those who have been hitting me up about some pork for the smoker. other than that i fill my pens full of sows and shoats right before deer season so i can replentish a few spots afterwards. around here so many people shoot them and leave them laying that i kind of have to take matters into my own hands. if you know what i mean. just kidding! that illegal! lol

Cant keep hogs alive in commie california. Cant use a knife to kill them either. I wont say that it dosent happen though. Personally I like to let them go once I catch them if I dont need the meat.

It all depends on where we are at, alot of the land owners will not allow a hog to leave his place alive and if we let them go we would not be allowed back so they have to be killed. If we can get to it on a 4 wheeler, we get them out alive and sell to game ranches or the processors. Some places we will Barr and mark the boars for good meat in the fall or the next year. It all depends on whos place, and if we can get to the hog without too much trouble.

Here in Hawaii we do all of the above it just depends on the situation like others have already stated. For me personally alot of my food comes from the mountain and/or the sea I hunt and dive regularly to feed myself and others. But we do let go alot as well we also castrate and mark boars we catch too. We hobble some sometimes and raise them or give them to others who wanna raise them. I eat most of what I catch.

Wish I had someone here that would buy the ones I catch thats great you have that option.

Happy Doggin'

Where i live in middle TN we have hardly any dog season for them and when we do its during open deer season so you cant hunt because dumb a#* deer hunters will shoot your dogs but game wardens will write people permits to trap snare spot light and shoot them over bait the state flew helicopters in the areas i hunt a week or so ago and killed between 75 and 100 and left them to rot in the woods but wardens will write you a ticket for turning a dog on them what a great orginization TWRA is for all hunters i get to buy hunting liscense in 3 other states just to run my dogs and keep them in shape and my area is infested with hogs it realy sux

I stick almost every hog I catch. I might hobble one if I catch it early on in a hunt and then stick it right before I leave or if I need something to train with. My landowners want hogs dead or at least hauled off. If I got caught turning one loose once I caught it that would probably the last time I hunted that place. If I ever got caught hauling hogs in to turn loose it would really be the end, and I'd probably never find another place to hunt. I've got a buyer fairly close but unless it's a good hog the prices are too low to bother with and some of them don't want dog caught hogs anyway. Hauling a hundred pound sow thirty miles and selling it for fifteen bucks don't make much sense. I can save that much in meat just by cutting it up myself.
