crossroads

Postby thomasg » Wed Oct 24, 2012 3:24 am

So I'm at a crossroad gentleman. To start off I'm completely new to hound hunting. I have trained bird dogs in the past but nothing as far as mammal hunting. I'm in socal now(not by choice the marine corps brought me here) I have my old german shorthair (5) who is a decent bird dog, I have my blue nose pit(house pet) whose about to be 2, and my brand spankin new catahoula who is 5 months. I may move back to colorado which is home to ma. ny a mt lion and bear(illegal). Or I may move to north carolina to take this "government contracting" job. So now I need to know what my next move is. Do I give me gsp to my mom and get some more hog dogs and move to nc. Do I keep all of em and hunt hogs? Do I say f it and get rid of all of em and get some hounds to run in co. Not sure really what to do. I really do want to get into this sport but have no idea where I should fit in. Your advice please.

The Rocky Mts are the marrow of the earth. They make the east look like foothills. I'd pick CO.

Well, theres really only one way to go about this if your serious about hog hunting. Get yourself a small hog to keep in the back yard. Train on it and base your decision on your dogs apptitude for traianing. Your Cat is at about that perfect age to iniate training so Id start with him/her. Best way to to go IMO

I'd just use the GSP and the catahoula as find dogs, the pit as a catch dog, and go to hunting hogs. You can use them where you are in So Cal, you can use them on hogs, bear, and lion(except for the pit) if you end up in Co, and you can use them on hogs if you end up in NC. If you end up in CO you can always pick up a couple of hound to run with them, but if you give them the opportunity and some encouragement, the dog you have can show you some game.

good luck

Well all those dogs could hunt hogs anywhere. I live in NC and hunt hogs with catahoulas birddog crosses and pitts, but also if that GSPs a legit birddog theres great quail in eastern NC and some big bird groups out there. But yea i love my hills here and wouldnt leave it if i didnt have to. Good luck where ever you go.
