In my experience, a good hog dog will make a good bear dog, and most good bear dogs make good hog dogs, but I have seen a couple of bear dogs that didn't transisition well. To paraphrase what longshot said, in general a dog that is good at one will be good at the other, but all dogs are individuals, and if you start trying to apply generalities to individuals, you will not be satisfied.

rspillers,
Thanks for the copmliment. I figure you are gonna learn how to do it one way or the other, becuase if you are like I was in your shoes then the drive is too strong to let a few nay sayers stop you.
So you might as well hlearn it like it is and benifet from my mistakes. I think most people on this board feel the same way.
Trying to keep a new or young hunter out of the woods is the WRONG approach to things!
We are glad to have you. Feel free to fire away with all the questions you got.
Good Luck
