productive Quick hunt

Postby longshot » Thu May 21, 2009 6:39 pm

Started at day break with myself and 3 of the crew from the ranch we were hunting.

It was a Nippy 56deg, rather cool for a late May Texas morning.

We drove through the river road to get to the topside(I hadnt hunted here in a few years)

I realized how much I missed it's natuaral beuty

We had planned a walk hunt but hadnt left the truck yet when the dogs struck out hunting. In 8min I hear Poco let out 3 barks and then line out for a race. They make it 510yards out and split. Poco slowly comes back and I figured he dropped out and headed back unlike him but he is getting some age on him. As he is about to show up we see him hearding a group of hogs our way. They stop at about 80yards. THere was a large sow standing to the side so KER-PLUNK the hammer falls on my Marlin 45-70 and she goes down.

Poco catches out so I send my only catchdog for backup. When we reached the spot we heard him it is silent. Right next to us thebush erupt and Poco opens bayed on another nice sow. We watched and waited for the catchdog. After a few mins I realize she aint coming and I slip my Blackhawk from its leather and level it on her shoulder. With a 45 slug she falls hard with a THUD!

WE check the GPS and it shows GInger and Twinkle bayed 400 more yards. As we walk closer we start to hear the constant Chiming of the bay dogs giving a hog a ear full.

They are bayed on a small island in the middle of the knee deep Frio River. We had to walk a 1\4mile down stream to find a trail cravasing down the almost strait down, steep rocky bank. As we reach the bottom, Saide the catchdog found her way down as well and makes her way to the island. The hog is caught and It took almost 3min to clear the rocky bed and make it out to the island. I drug the small hog to the bank so the other wouldnt have to get wet. They dibatched the hog and to our dismay he has roughly 2inch CUTTERS!!!

Twinkle suffered a poke through the ribcage and into the Thoracic cavity. We snapped a few pics and head for the truck. Going down the fence line I saw GInger and poco winding a hog and tried to call the back. The didnt listen and jumped a small shoat on the other side of the cross fence and ran it about 50yards. The shoat turned to face them realizing the fence protected him from nearly 100lbs of shoat thrashing fury. He almost seemed to be laughing. Try to keep Twinkle for ripping out of my arms and keeping her lung from spewing out with my fingers while she was barking at the shoat was NOT my idea of fun! I handed Twinkle off. Call me lazy but to keep from having to get dogs from going through the fence and me having to climb it. the problem was solved with small tension on the trigger. The shoat stood there as I steaded my ruger 45Lc on the fence and blazed a hole through his shoulders. "Take that little hog" I tought to myself.

we hauled to the Vet and Twinkle should be OK but out of commision for the next 3 weeks.

Haul hunt was maybe 20min!

Here is the 80lb boar with the 2in cutters(ranch hands Cutter and Phillip shown):
