It seems my fantasy of a close range good nosed tight mouthed strike em run em stretch em dog is really just a fantasy. I'd put that black trigg/walker pup on one but he snatches anything wild you put in front of him!

if you are going to run hogs, you are going to loose dogs from time to time. its part of the game. learning how to patch your dogs up will save you vet bills. i always hope that no one gets cut but the reality is it happens almost every time. ive also had dogs killed both with vests and without.

DDS,

Hunting in Australia ia toally differen game than where I hunted in South Carolina. The guys therre use BIG dogs and they usually jump from a truck. The dogs run down the hog like a greyhound race and then catch it. Not like us in SC where we bay the hog then slip in and turn the catch dog loose. Well that is my expierences anyway. our, Catch dogs would not get close enough to Sneak up un them before they broke. It is just different worlds man. Not saying any one is better than the other, just different!

Kinda in this situation myself, I have a bluetick thats real gritty and redbone thats pretty young is new to hunting, my "catch" dog is a 70-80lb (depending on the amount of bacon grease) pitbull. Im trying to start hunting hogs in oregon and want to get some vests on these boys once I find a good population of hogs out here, know they're here just gotta narrow the search!
Who makes the better quality vests? what material is preferable? Anyone making leather collars?
Thanks

2yo Bulldog "Diesel"
1yo Redbone "JW"

I like the ugly dog ranch gear. I've run their guardian kevlar vests and the devastator vests and had real good luck with both. They make a good cut collar too. I like the lighter, more flexible ones I can't think what they call them. Leather would be ok I guess, but with all the mud and water and blood you're going to get on them it's gonna take a lot of work to keep them in good shape. The only thing I've got that doesn't wear uglydog is my staghound/dogo, she's got a duncan vest.

I think your cross will catch if you run more than 2. I wouldnt put more than 2 at a time on the ground. Back in the old days my Papaw ran Catahoulas with a touch of American bull dog and he used 1 dog for it all , he would turn the dog out and when he bayed he was baying loose but when he knew Papaw was at the bay to help he would catch and thats how it was done. Now days there are people that still follow this type of practice and I think its ok maybe better but he will need at least a cut collar. But I like many others like to throw out 3-4 dogs and if they are rough they will catch way before you can get there thus dead dogs and good dogs dont come cheap and you can suit up 1 bad dog to catch lowering your chances for injured dogs. This is my opinion many may see it different.
