I have had Plotts for 30 years too & if I run more than 3, they will catch about everything they are put on. I, however do not want them catching a big hog over a mile or so away when I cannot get to them to help them. We catch all our hogs alive & I dont want them chewed to pieces when I get there. Some of my Plotts or too catchy if I hunt them with other dogs, so I turn them out by theirself & they usually will bay & I can turn in a pit catchdog.
I have never had a problem with our pits trying to start fights. Once they know their job is catching hogs, that is what they do. Where the problem comes in, is when people get pits that have already been fought & they try to make catchdogs out of them. You turn them into a bay & it is 50-50 on whether they catch a hog or dog.
Just for the record, Henderson Johnson had Airdales that were some fine catchdogs. Orville Roberts used to use a Catahoula for a catchdog. Archie Boone & Taylor Crockett used Plotts for a catchdog. Bottum line, use what works for you & quit sterotyping what somebody else is using just because you dont like that breed. If we dont all stick together we will defeat ourselves. Believe me, we are all under the gun, just because we are doghunters.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A PIT MAN. BUT I HAVE COME TO SEE THEIR DOWN FALLS.
1. SHORT LEGS
2. NO STAMINA
I LOOKED FOR AWHILE GOT WHAT I WANTED A BIG TALL DOG THAT CAN RUN WITH THE CURS AND CATCH ONE ALONE. .
MY SUGAR DOG HAS ALOT DIFFERENT BLOOD IN HER.
3/8 DOGO 1/8 AB 3/16 PIT 5/32 WOLF/STAGHOUND 1/16 DANE 1/16 BULLTERRIER 1/32 BULLMASTIFF.BRED FOR SPEED, POWER, LUNG, AND MAGIC.
I THINK THE HAIRY RUNNING DOG REALLY CALMS THEM DOWN. .

ILL BE THE FIRST TO SAY THAT FOR A LEAD IN CD YOU COULDNT ASK MORE THAN A GOOD PIT,
BUT, IF YOU RUN THEM THE WAY I DO " OFF LEAD" STAMINA BECOMES AN ISSUE.
I STILL HAVE A GREAT PIT AND HE IS AS SOLID AS A CD COULD BE BUT LIKE MOST PITS HE ISNT GOOD IN THE HEAT AND RUNS LIKE A CHAIN SMOKER. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH HIM FIGHTING EITHER.
NOW I KNOW PEOPLE THAT HAVE PITXCURS OR PITXHOUNDS CROSSES THAT ARE BANG UP CDS AND USE THEM ALL THE TIME. I WILL TELL YOU WHEN YOU CROSS A PIT OVER A CUR YOU WILL GET SOME THAT BAY AND SOME THAT CATCH AND SOME THAT DO BOTH OR NEITHER. ITS JUST A CRAP SHOOT WHEN YOU MIX HARD TO SOFT DOG.
YOU MAY THINK YOU HAVE A GOOD CURXPIT CROSS CD UNTIL IT GETS HIT. WILL IT LET GO TRY AND GET AWAY LIKE A CUR OR WILL IT HANG TILL THE END. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU PUT THE DOG INTO THAT SITUATION.
I WOULD JUST PREFER TO KNOW WHAT I GET BEFORE IT GETS TO THAT POINT.
IT JUST ALL COMES DOWN TO WHAT OF CD YOU WANT. AND WHAT SUITS YOUR STYLE THERE IS NO ANSWER TO WHAT BREED IS THE BEST.

Re: Catch dogs other Than Bully's
the biggest reason most bulldogs don't have stamina is because most doggers don't put in the work to condition them. if you put in the running on them to get them into shape they can run w/ hounds. remember the old dogmen conditioned their dogs for endurance not power. Vick style morons tie the dogs to tractor tires & such so they can have great big muscley dogs. the old timers ran them A LOT. the dogs ran for for hours EVERY DAY. a wellbred bulldog that is in good condition can run just like a good dogo. OTH if you don't run them a dogo is just a bigger walked in catchdog.

pops very ture the only problem with my english pit cross is he does get winded but i can turn him in from 100 yrds or so as long as he can hear the bay when he gets there it game over for that pig he stays caught even if cut and he is level headed he is exelent with my kids but conditioning is the key i run al my dogs for 3-5 miles a day just to keep them in good shape

Re: Catch dogs other Than Bully's
killem i agree with you, the dog has to be bred for the lung. You can take these molasser type pits and excersice them all day long and in the end you still wont end up with a bull with stamina. they may be better than others just have there limitations.
the only type i have seen with that could actually hang with the curs is the old gamebred pits. small in stature and about 35-45 pounds. they will catch like the dickens but they are no anchor. and get hurt to from getting slung around.
fine line between a real cd and a dog that will catch.
