I just picked up a couple of Blue Lacy pups. Has anyone ever hunted hogs with them? I have never had any kind of hog dog, just hounds. I'm curious if anyone is familiar with their style. Thanks

I know a guy who bred them in central california for a while. I may be wrong but he was listed in full cry for a while as a registered breeder. They are beautiful dogs. Short haired merle coloring and easy handling. I personally have only seen 2 in action. One was terrible. Trashy, didnt work with the other dogs and was eventually culled. However I personally think the dog never had a chance due to the owner not knowing what he was doing. The other dog was good. While it wasnt a stand out dog it definitely put good work in and struck its own hogs.
May I ask where the dog came from? Was it out of Steve D? He is the only guy that I have ever heard of in California who bred or ran these dogs. They worked well for him. Orbie Beardon used to be a local dog jocky who sold many dogs over the years. Including the Lacy dogs. All those Lacy dogs that Orbie had came from Steve D. They were hunting partners.

Thanks for anything you all had to input. I'm hoping because I do put a lot of time into my dogs that they will be what I want out of them. I bought them from Mark Lacey up in Cottonwood. It's their family's breeding. These ones are blue. They do look pretty cool.

He is right about the merle. I was wrong when I said that. There is a definite hue to a lacy's coat that distinguishes it from other dogs. Merle is definitely not the right word.

We use lacy's down here in Texas quit a bit. Just like any other breed, some got it some don't. But you should find, they are extremely smart, easy to train, easy to handle, and have a very good drive. Some we use that don't quite make a hog dog usually make excellent blood dogs. If you put the time in with them I bet you will be the proud owner of two good hog dogs. Also they are very loyal.

I did notice that they are used in the US they are mainly in Texas, these pups are pretty smart and I like that. How old do you wait for them to get before you start training them? Would I train them the same way I train my hounds?

Sure some will disagree, but I start them fairly early. At about 6 mos +\- I start taking them with me and letting them stay in the box till the other dogs have a solid bay then turn them loose. I find this helps in the trash breaking and having a puppy playing around. At around 9 mos or when they learn they are there to work and can pretty much keep up, I will turn them loose with a older dog that I want them to hunt like. If you want them to hunt like your hounds then train them the same way, I wouldn't expect them to be very open if at all, but I could be wrong about that. I have also found that the parrot headed ones are not as rough as the blockier headed ones. Most I have seen turn out to be just what you want, not many I have seen wouldn't work. Good luck.

I'm starting to really like their temerament, they are starting to handle pretty well and getting used to the hounds quickly. You seem to know alot about how they act, I'm thinking I will just work them the same way as the hound. Right now they still aren't all that focused but they have interest

Thanks everyone for a little knowledge on the Lacys

If you decide you don't want them, for whatever reason, just put them suckers on a bus!! Good luck with them. If they have the same drive & temperment as the lacy's down here they will do you right.

They are a little under 6 months old right now. We started them on a smaller boar, they immediatly got interested, and within 30 seconds were barking! Last week we took them out with a couple of the hounds and they caught a boar abou 140 lbs, they bayed it up so good. I'm really impressed with them so far. They are really focused already and starting to use their noses. Thanks for checking up on them! Here are a couple pics my wife took of them...
