Hog Hunting Walkers

Does anyone hunt or know of a line of Walkers that are used and bred to be hog dogs? My dad used to hunt fox and coyotes with Stormy bred Walkers. We use Plotts and Black Mouth Curs on hogs. Dad and I were talking about how long folks have been breeding Walkers, and I just started wondering.

My buddy used to brag on Catahoulas. He bred to a Walker and he likes the two he's got so much he bred back to a Walker again for a 3/4 bred dog. The pups are about six months old. Will be interesting to see if they run across state lines in their effort to find the first hog track or they sure enough work. I'm pleased with my Plotts for right now.

I run Loose Bruce-bred Walkers for hogs. In my experience, the Bruce dogs are good for just about any type of game they are turned out on.

Are these walkers and plotts running open on a hog track or closed you guys are using?

Our plotts are open. Some bark more than others. Our main strike dog barks the most, but he also bays the most hogs.

I thought everyone wanted silent dogs if you are going to run open dogs why not the speed demons runnin walkers triggs foxhounds coyote hounds etc if they have the speed to catch and kill coyote and no bottom seems like they are faster than tree dogs seems logical maybe a dash of pitbull for balls

We have silent dogs that are Black Mouth Curs, but they don't have as much nose as the plotts. I don't agree with everyone about silent dogs baying more hogs. I do believe that you hurt yourself if you run five or six open dogs. I believe with one or two of the right kind of open dogs, (fast, gritty, good bay dogs), that I can bay as many or more than people who run silent dogs. I say I can bay more because I can find hogs with hounds that cur dogs can't find.

We use pitts for lead-in catch dogs. I never liked to mix em with bay dogs because we spent half of a day hunting and the other half sewing.

They half Walker/Catahoulas and my Plotts are partly open (I say partly because they don't sound like four hounds on a hot coon track). And that does mean the hog knows they're coming, right?. We ride thru the woods with the dogs ranging in front and sides of us (not us following the dogs) and when a track becomes known to lead to a hog, the dogs do open. I've seen the dogs work a cold track quite a bit without opening. When we hunted with only his straight tight-mouthed Catahoulas, I think we didn't get any more hogs than now. And my Plotts open quite a bit - I prefer it that way - It adds another enjoyable dimension to the hunt.

around here its hard to catch a pig with open dogs. Especially if you are not using running dogs. You can turn a short hunt that can potentially turn into multiple hogs, into a all night ordeal with one hog at the end.

Ive owned several good Treeing Walker Hog Dogs the one in the picture is Sammie she got killed in September 2008 got broad sided by a 300 pound boar didnt break the skin didnt think much of it guess i should have she died 3 days later she was one of the the best hog dogs I have ever owned. She was silent except when she was looking at a hog she was still mouthed coon hunting to, the only critter she would open track on was bobcats. I also had a full brother to her only a litter younger I called him Cocky. Cocky was only 2 years old when he got hit by car he was making a better dog than Sammie. Cocky would rig out of the back of a truck off the front of a boat silent mouth on track again except on bobcats. Ive also owned several other dogs out of this same line of Walker Coon Dogs that made excellent hog dogs all but one of them were off the same male dog that is dead and gone now his name was Nite Ch. PR' Faulkner's Sam The Drifter, the other good Walker hog dog I had was out of a gyp that was off of Sam the Drifters littermate brother Nite Ch. PR' Pryor's Crank. This line of dogs
goes back to Guess's Deanwood Drifter, Spring Creek Rock, Nocturnal Nailer, Hickory Nut Harry, a bunch of Clover Dogs, House's Lipper, River Bend Flag, Hillbilly Mac, Gibby's Lead and whole bunch of who's who of famous Coon Hound stud dogs no big game dogs that im aware of in their pedigrees. As far as using running hounds to hog hunt I have but they have to much of a game drive in them they dont really care wat they run wat ever they come accross first. Fox and coyote hounds is something that I know alil about ive owned them hunted them and competive field trialed them for most of my born life until last summer wen i finally lost the last pair I had out of a line of hounds that i had since I was 14 years old but thats another story. In recent times we have had alot of luck with cur running hound crosses like them really well between Zack Brent and Trey I think they have 4 or 5 of them out of 2 different litters. I know you wish you had her back. Her ped looks like a who's who of coon dog bloodlines. I have seen several walkers that would run a hog, but never a silent one. Maybe I'll get lucky and run across one someday. Thanks for the information.

I noticed a plott in the pictures. What is it out of?
