Does anyone have any tips on stitching a dog up. I’ve cleaned and stitch small cuts that did not require putting the dog to sleep but have taken dogs to vet for large wounds and not so cooperative dogs. What can a person use to knock a dog out if needed would sleeping pills do the trick. It seems to happen once or twice a year and I end up with 300 to 500 $ vet bill each time. Thanks for any help

If course you have to make a judgement on what your capable of doing in terms of veternary medicine. I have a prescription for acepromozine in pill form. It puts the dog down and makes the job easier. Something I have used for smaller wounds that helps sedate the dogs is benadril (dyphenhydromine). Its an allergy medication found over the counter. Many vets have recommended this as a way to partially sedate dogs for airplane trips ect. I keep the benadril with me in the field and give it to the dog once I get back to the truck. By the time I get home to do a thorough cleaning of the wound and close it the dogs pretty dopey and relaxed. You can possibly get an acepromozine script from the vet. If you have horses an equine vet might be a better bet.

If you can get some rompum from a vet, along with some vitaly important instructions as to the use of it, you can do any form of surgery. I understand the dangers involved today, but cocaine spread across the wound deadens it and makes it possible to do what ever you need to do. Oh crap, I'm telling my age again to know these remedies!

Benny are you on those pain meds again for your knee? You can't be saying stuff like that on the www, someone will get the wrong idea about you. We can't have people thinking you are some kind of a shade tree pharmacist now can we?

I was just checking to see if anyone was paying attention.

spray ether in a rag and hold it over the dogs nose , dont hold it on for to long just long enough for the dog to go out this all depends on the dog ,you learn how long is enough with practice when they stop squirming take the rag off ,the longer you hold the rag to their nose the longer they will be out , we have used this as long as I can remember to doctor cut dogs , baking powder ,and sugar are both good blood stops, leather needles and fishing line are good suture stuff

I have done the stitch thing a few times but i think it heals better open. it lets the fluid drain aout of the wound and helps from infection. the only time i think is required to stich in if a dog gets gutted. I do know a guy that had to stitch one of his champion bluetick's lip and was pretty effective.

My rule of thumb is if the dog can lick the wound leave it alone, if its a bad cut skin staple it but leave the lowest part of the cut open to drain. Spray and heal in a can does wonders also.
