I was wondering if you hog hunters have seen 100+ lb pitbulls. A guy here in Albuquerque raises a strain that reach in to the 140 pound marks...they are freakin huge.

The APBT is the mid-sized breed of the three generally referred to as pit bulls (see also American Staffordshire Terrier (AST or "Amstaff") and Staffordshire Bull Terrier (SBT or "Staffie"), though the term has been deemed "slang". Males should weigh 35 to 65 pounds (16 to 29 kg), females 30 to 60 pounds (16 to 27 kg); an APBT should be roughly around 18–22 inches tall at the withers. There is no specific preference for nose color in the APBT standard.

Confusion among Pit Bull breeds

American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) standard.The three “pit bull” breeds all have nearly identical standards, with only the acceptable sizes and colors varying. Also, the AST and the APBT have the same heritage. Many people still consider them to be simply different types of the same breed. Dogs registered with the UKC as an APBT are often dual registered with the AKC as an AST. Adding to the muddle is the fact that many people refer to any dog of these breeds, as well as American Bulldogs and sometimes Bull Terriers, as “pit bulls.” There are actually twenty or more breeds that can easily be mistaken for a pit bull. [2] American Pit Bull Terriers are a working breed, and American Staffordshire Terriers share their heritage until the 1960s, when the breeds split into two. The only difference is that the AST is the show strand and tend to be bigger and more 'pet'-looking than the APBT, since they don't retain much of the working attributes of the APBT.

THere is also the Presa Canario which looks like a Monster truck pitbull. There is a hog hunter in SC that has one for a catch dog. I have his brochure.

Generally pitbulls DO NOT get that big. They can get up to 100-110lb but very rare and more of a freak thing than a line of dogs. They are most likly a Arkansas Giant or cross of some sort.

140lbs is a far fetched weight for a Pit. In the old days in Europe pits were used as fighting dogs and averaged around 35-45lbs. They have only recently evolved to be larger.

I saw a full blood regestered DOGO from Canada that weighed 140lbs. It takes a lot of dog to make that much weight. He did fine up there in the snow and ice but almost heat stroked here in South Texas last fall. He was powerful and striong but for a hunting application I would not own him.

A catch dog of that size is utterly usless to me.........Just my opinion.

I wouldn't want to pack a dog that heavy out of the brush, after he got cut down.
Not to mention the damage he would do to most of the hogs.
Imagine 140lbs dragging you to the bay. Not Me..

no such thing as a pure bred pit bull over 85#. the dagger & whopper lines of "giant" rednose were outed by the bordeaux (turner & hooch dog) breeders that sold the bitches used to found them. same w/ some of the giant blues & the neapolitan mastiff breeders that sold the bitches used to make those. all the giant pits are about as pure as yellow snow.
the weight classes in the USA stop at 60#, after that dogs are catchweight. catchweight exists because on rare occassions a dog that was heavily bulldog in appearance was produced (on the opposite end occasionally dogs heavily terrier in type are born under 30#) and it was considered unimportant that they be closely matched in weight so 61# dogs wound up in the box w/ 75# dogs. the heaviest no joke pit bull was an 81# advertised in sporting dog journal (magazine for dog fighting) in the mid 1970s (when it was still legal in some states).

I have a question. Ive been out recently with some guys that refered to theirs as blue nose and/or alligator pits. Is this a strain or are they subgroups of something you mentioned?

Blue nose is a strain...like the red nose strain.. Alligator is a family of dogs that go back to the Plumber brothers great Alligator dog.

I went to the Valdez site and checked them out. They have some nice looking dogs but I would have to see one on a scale. They dont look like the Valdez Family is into hog hunting but more Weight pulling.

Do you realize HOW BIG 140lbs is?

I know that you can do that in some places, and/or at certain times, but don't bet anything you can't afford to loose that you would be able to do it in NM. I havn't hunted every different unrelated group of hogs in NM, but I have hunted 4 or 5 of them, and I can assure you that while you might bay up a group and shoot the first one, that is the only one you will be shooting out of that group that day. With good enough dogs, you can bay them all up as singles, maybe a few doubles, but that group will not bay up as a group again for 12 to 24 hrs. Also, the distance that they will be spread over will be closer to 4 miles than to 400 yards.
