All hound pack?

Hey guy I'm thinkin bout doin an all hound group maybe one cur does this sound like an ok idea? Wats the best hound to use was thinkin bout plots but I love blueticks

I have used my hounds to catch a porker or two. I liked hunting behind my curs better then my hounds, because my hounds range further than I would like for them to. In big country with fewer hogs, my hounds will do better then my curs because of their extended range. No more hogs than we have around here the hounds with a cur thrown in the mix will work when a pack of straight curs won't get it done. I've had some curs wind and jump afew and get them caught. It just seems they struggle, in this dry country, to move a track as well as the hounds are able to. If you have an aboundance of hogs, a pair of loose baying curs that will lay teeth when needed would be my choice. Don't get me wrong about the curs, I love listening to good bay, but it pales in comparision to a couple of bawl mouth hounds starting a track and baying tight at the end. I have bayed a bunch of hogs with hounds only. A few years ago we used one Plott and one Black and Tan and bayed as many hogs as anyone around here. What you didn't see was the other 25 or so dogs that we went through to get to that pair. LOL Hounds are usually better "finders", curs are better "stoppers" and "holders". If you can find one of either, hound or cur, that can do all of the above, then you have got a hog dog. My Dad uses Black Mouth Curs and laughs about my "loose baying hounds", but they dig one up that his curs can't occasionally.

I wish I could get those two old hounds back, Daddy has been spanking me with a couple of young Black Mouths here lately!

Go on youtube and look up "hounds getting down". I would gladly feed that hound.

I love an all hound pack. Plotts preferably. If you throw a cur in, the key is finding a cur that has the staying power of a hound. Very rare. You will go through several to do so. As far as the idea, it sounds good. Personaly I cant stand a cur. All they want to do is have a pissing match when you dump them. Those hounds will hunt for ya! If you stay true to dogs that are bred to hunt, you will have much better luck. IMO

I run all hounds only. Mostly plotts and a few black and tans. I have never had any issues with grit. On the smaller ones it is usually over before we can get there. They also catch on the big ones, but that means vet bills. We have hunted with a few curs, but they had trouble keeping up with the hounds on a long run here in the mountains. They look good on short chases, but when the really stretch it out they fall out. We have also had trouble with them being ill. That is why we haven't had more of them, they never make it long enough to reproduce. There are very few of them in this area, so it may be that the ones we had were not out of good stock.

Outlaw and Dogem, what kinds and strains of curs were yall trying to use?

Stephens, Kemmer, Mountain, Catahoula

The Catahoulas were rough on game, but super ill. None of breeds seamed very long winded to me and all were hot-nosed.

We also tried a couple of Leopard hounds and a Blue Lacey with no success if that counts. They just would not hunt at all.

I have never tried a Black Mouth Cur, or any of the other hundred varieties. I am sure that they work for the people who are hunting them. I have not hunted enough curs to say they are all bad, but I did not see anything out of the ones we've tried to justify getting another one.


I do more bear hunting than anything, so that might be the difference in preference. I am sure some cur hunters think that the hounds are too big, slow, loud and bay too loose, but I don't run bloodhounds either.

Yea, I'm partial to hounds also, they are easier to get started because most of them are going to leave out and hunt. We have been breeding some BMC dogs for about four years. We have had to sort through several culls, but we are making progress. We got a pair of young curs that hunt like hounds and bay hard. I just hope in the future our ratio of good dog to cull dog gets better. We have sure had to wade through some BS to get to these! LOL

We bred our old Plott to a pretty good cur dog bitch. These pups are six months old and showing some promise. We are hoping to put a little more range on these curs.

We haven't had a problem with these dogs being ill, maybe it is just the strain.

A hound can strike and run a track bad track better than a cur, ull find more hogs with a hound, and they have alot more bottow than a cur dog and are usally looser baying. with that being said a cur dog can take a hot track and bay a hog easier than a hound. most run silent and have grit to shut a runner down ull bay more hogs with a silent dog. heres a few things to think about. do you want open or silent on track, tight or loose baying, long medium or short range. myself i always have atleast one hound and 2 or 3 cur dogs when i hunt. the hound will warm up the track so the curs can run it and shut it down. i also lie to tack a hound and cross it with a cur. it gives them the range, nose, and bottom of a hound. and it gives them the grit, silent on track, and easy hunting of the cur. if your interested in plotts heres a few bloodlines that i know work good crockett and weems, and in blackmouths i like ben jordian bred dogs, catahoulas i got my own line goin theres still some out there that work good but most are breed for looks and color now a days

Sounds like some of ya havent hunted behind a damn good cur dog before, I love my hounds dont get me wrong but I hunt behind some yella cur dogs that would put to shame hounds every week. I dont care for catahoulas or lacy's, havent seen a good one yet. To say one breed is better than another is just 1 mans personal preference thats it, you need to find what fits you best when it comes to your pack and your area.

I hunt Plotts, Curs, and cross's between the 2. I even like crossing my Plotts and Pits for making good RCD's. It just depends on the terrain that I'm hunting on each hunt. My Plotts are open and some silent. The Curs and RCD's are silent. On the Curs I do not hunt any BMC or any other breed of hound besides the Plotts. You can have a good dog in any breed but I just get more good dogs out of these. IMO when you combine a few good dogs out of a couple different breeds that have different hunting styles then you have just rounded out a heck of a pack.

I hunt a half cur pack and a half hound pack. Both cur and hound packs have advantages and disadvantages. I hunt some small leases and the cur dogs come in real handy when I don't want a dog to run more than a mile looking for a hog. If I had to chose, I would want an all hound pack over a cur pack, but I would not be able to hunt in all the places that I do.
