I have made numerous cut collars over the years and they have come out quite well. Ive used leather, kevlar from old bullet proof vests and firehose. I have made 2 running vests from kevlar and while they have looked great the issue is with how well they fit. None of them that I have made fit as well as the razorback vest I use. One vest works fine for a catchdog but I wouldnt put either one of them on a dog thats freecasted. The dogs seem to get too many raw spots when I freecast them with my homemade vests.

I may get ribbed for this, but here are my .02. I only use a vest on a catch dog. The reason being, i want my bay dogs to bay not catch. I think it gives them a sence of protection. I also think it is harder for them to get around in the thick stuff. If you got a dog that is too rough, let them get knocked around a few times, they will back off or die. the ones that back off IMO are better dogs. I like a cut collar that lets the dog move their neck freely, it helps them get out of the way easier. The ones made from disgarded fire hose are my favorite.

I too only use cut vest on my lead in catchdogs. Around here the hounds dont need anything slowing them down.

I use vests on my CD's and RCD's but not on my bay dogs. I have made collars out of leather before but never tried making vest's. I just get them from Custom Collars.com because the prices are good enough I don't figure I could make them much cheaper.

yeh me to just vest on the catch dog , tried em on the runnin dogs usually pulled em off after a bit because of sore arm pits . theres a fine line between grit and ignorance dogs need to know when to back off!! and i make all my own gear , used my old vest as a template to make new one, my collers are just sling web w/ nylon collars rivited to it . i got about 5$ in a 22$ cut collar .
