Javelina
Javelina
Hey guys just a quick question here. Do any of you guys down in the southwest hunt javelina with dogs? I do plan to move to Arizona in the future and always wondered this, being I've never heard of it.
Re: Javelina
Check your state laws to see if it's legal and remember, javalinas can be pretty rough on a dog that has not been trained on them (and survived). They are real quick cutters.
Oiler coach Bum Phillips when asked why he takes his wife on all the road trips.
Phillips: “Because she is too damn ugly to kiss good-bye.”
Not sure if it's true, just funnier than hell. A been there done that moment.

1 it is illegal in az to hunt them with dogs.
I know they are hunted with hounds in some countries and successfully.
I'm curious as to how these hunts go off and how the hounds work with out being killed. I have seen dogs kill a javelina by slowly tearing it up and basically bleeding it to death. they are just built wrong for a dog to kill out right, they cant get a throat hold or break their neck. the real issue to hunting them with hounds in most of the areas I've run into them is there are way to many of them in a herd for even ten hounds to deal with and it always turns into a mess. I've had more then enough run ins with the javelina coming after the dogs unprovoked.
another problem is a screaming javelina gets the whole herd fired up and they wont leave a wounded one behind like wild hogs often do.
javelina have Jekyll n Hyde personalities often they pose no threat at all and run away. but on those occasions they don't it can get real nasty.

Re: Javelina
i know a mexican kid out here in queen creek who's form sonora, mexico.
his family is all ranchers hey says in mexico they use mixed up kind of dogs on the ranch that are "do it all type" and these dogs will run javelina, deer, coyote etc. but if one gets killed so be it.
they dont seem to be placed in such high regards as here in the states.
unfortunatly i dont know exactly what the dogs do, or how they would get one away from the herd without the whole heard attacking. but from what i understand it can be done.

Re: Javelina
I would stay away from them, every one that we have caught with our dogs has cut every dog bad and has even killed one of my hounds. They dont cut the dogs like feral hogs do by just throwing there head's up at the dogs, Javalinas actually bite the dogs and shake them like a dog would a house cat. If you had some dogs that would just bay on them and watch there back from all the rest of the javalinas coming to help, you could prob do it. But I think you would wast time, $ and dogs on them. Our hog dogs had 1 bayed up one time and we turned the bulldog loose and the javalina had my bulldogs head in his mouth and my bull dog had him on on his side. It was a mess that put our hunting that night to a end. We video 1 that we shot with a bow and when the arrow hit, he spun around and almost bit the tip of the arrow as it passed. They are very quick also. good luck buddy
Re: Javelina
I was coon hunting one night near Benson, on the San Pedro river. Had an older b&t and a young walker cross. They ran a javelina into an old collapsed mine shaft and when the javelina could'nt go any further, he turned and proceeded to cut both dogs to ribbons. Took 140 stitches to put the young dog back together. From then on, if that old b&t smelled javelina, he was back with me with his head between my knees looking into the dark. I think running them with hounds is a recipe for vet bills and dead dogs all for a stinky, overgrown rodent.
when in doubt turn em out

Re: Javelina
As has already been stated its not legal to run Javalina with dogs in Arizona but someone forgot to tell the Javalina that...
I have my dogs bent off Javalina and thats likly the best I can do because some times those little stinky pigs have a death wish. When I am out in the field and the dogs smell them they will come to me but sometimes the Javalina follow and try to pick a fight, usualy a few rocks will drive them off.
The right dog can kill a Javalina fast usualy by throat holds but have also seen them just pull out a section of the backbone and once had a dog crush the back of ones skull, he had help in the form of two other dogs pulling on its back legs. Most of the kills have taken place inside our fenced orchard and at night so I don't think anyone can blame the dogs for protecting themselves. Damn things can dig too well for thier own good but I have not had one in the orchard for around two years now, big rocks along the fence helped.
The dogs doing the killing were not hounds though... just mixed breeds with mostly lab in them. Javalina are 35-45lbs in my area and I would think hogs are much more durable. Can a dog even hope to kill an adult hog? Never hunted hogs as we don't have them here and I don't want them.

Re: Javelina
Tom, as a hound man you are certainly right to NOT want them. Do your best to keep them out of your country. As for the average sized hound or cur dog killing a mature grown hog IMO the answer is definitely the dog cannot do it. This will probably get answers from some who disagree.
