Our younger dogs stepped up and outstruck the veteran dogs on sunday at the mouth of a 3 mile solid brush canyon. It was early am and it was probably in the low 50 degree range. The race went 2 3/4 miles up the canyon as the crow flies. The young dogs stopped it long enough for our more veteran dogs to show up and stop it completely.
I got this hunt on "dog cam" and the video basically shows a game of "show me your nuts." The 300lb boar was forced to sit on his ass or pay the consiquences.
We finally closed the 2 3/4 mile gap and let the catchdog go. He seemed to be lined out when I let him go but but he is deaf in one ear and basically made a hard left turn and wasnt seen again until it was all over. We call him "NASCAR" now on account of his constant turn to the left.
When I showed up it was close to 100 degrees and the dogs went from baying to fighting the hog. There was little to no chance of wheelbarrowing him. One of my helpers was a few hundred yards back motivating the exhausted guided hunters to keep moving, one helper took the long route and was way behind, the other was a few steps behind me. When he showed up he decided he was going to attempt to wheelbarrow the hog and took two shots to the thigh from the boar. Lucky for him the boar didnt connect (sadly didnt make it into the footage on dog cam.)
Finally the hunter showed up with the rest of the gang. He took the high road and got above the hog on the embankment, leaned over a limb and shot strait down into him.
It took all day to get this boar out. We didnt weigh him cause we had to break him down into pieces to get him out but I would guess him between 320-340lbs.
Heres the youtube link to the "dog cam" for this hunt. Its heavily edited. It was really long and the camera kept flipping up leaving no picture so I shortened it significantly and took out the blank spots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx8weH_0 ... detailpage
