Hogs Gone Wild (Dogs on the show)

Postby bull_357 » Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:01 pm

I was just curious as to what you guys who have had or been around hog dogs all of your life thought about the dogs on the Discovery program. Personally I have never owned hog dogs and have only been around a few, but I have had hounds and bay dogs of different variations and species for awhile now. I personally think the cur pair Daisy and I forgot the other ones name and Cajun from the Florida group seem to be the real deal. The group from texas with the Great Dane just seem to have spotty dogs or maybe its just the show making them look that bad? Not to mention some of the comments the owners say like the dog has to good of a nose and that's why it cant find scent today just confuses me big time. It just seems like there is more excuses from the texas group then there is success. What do you all think about the show and the dogs on it?

The texas group has stated that the dogs they get are rescued dogs from animal shelters. I think they might have 1 maybe dog that is half assed and the others are just getting lucky once in a while. I think the show is making them look as good as they can and that is probably a hard task. You can tell if you know what is happening in the real world that the show is geared towards trying to educate the non hunting public. I think it is trying to do a good thing and help the hunting comunity and i hope the show continues. Sorry if i rambled. Ill shut up now.

What baffles me the most about all these groups is that they hardly ever "hunt" their dogs. They use their strike dogs like catch dogs. They simply dump their dogs on hogs they already see most of the time. Either they dont have any confidence in their dogs, there dogs really cant hunt or they dont have enough experience to know the difference. They dont have enough dogs for a professional outfit either. They need enough good fresh dogs to hunt all day and night to do an adequate job. They are all grossly understaffed in the dog department to do business like this 5 days a week.

The one thing that botheres me the most is what these "profesionals" consider a succesful day in term of effective hog removal. Killing or capturing 1 pig on an all nighter hunt isnt successful.

I think the show is doing a good job at reaching out to non hunters and showing them that hogs are a real problem in this country and that hunting is a good tool. I dont think any of them other then that guy over in Hawaii have a clue about hunting hogs. I think they are all learning as they go and the ones in FL are just learning a little faster. I too cant see how they can call a succesful day taking one hog. They are doing nothing to even slow down the hogs by taking one or two. These guys need to take a little time to learn about hogs before becoming profesional hunter/trappers. I think many times what they say and do on the show makes them look like idiots, but its not hurting other hunters or the way we are looked at. If anything I feel this show might even help a little. You guys that run hog dogs can now use this show to help you get more spots, tell they land owner your nothing like them clowns on TV and that your going to take care of all there hogs not just one or two.

I think the show is good for dog hunters. What we don't know, is what is being edited out of the show. They put the hogs in a bad light, and justly so. They are costing farmers and land owners millions, if not billions of dollars in crop and pasture damages.

With all that being said, I haven't seen a sure enough HOG DOG out of any of the groups. I don't really know how you would show what a real dog could do unless you had a six hour program. LOL

Ya I agree I know with the breeding rates of hogs killing 1-2 a night is going to get you no where with a farm that is covered in them. I bet if a few of you guys went to the farmers from the shows and caught 10-15 a night they would get the point of what true hog dogs can do to control the population. I guess it the same for us running coyotes guys that want them off their property we go in and get them out. I mean there are other guys that could do it with less dogs and or call and kill 1-2 or two a year, but we can usually put a good dent in them in a few weekends.

I really think if someone with a good group and good dogs with have the dogs from Flordia they would do spectacular. I have seen them cast Aries and Daisy a few times and they are always quick to strike and as aggressive as any catch dog on the show.

I enjoy the show even though it is more for an introduction to the problem and showing that dogs can help. I hope it sticks around and I am curious if it last a year or two how good the dogs from Florida are going to get.

I personally think the show is a joke and I would not keep any of the dogs on the show. Not to change the topic but...there is another show coming on starting AUG 16th on A&E. It is called "American Hoggers". It is a group out of Texas and it appears to be a little bit more like I would expect a show to be. Some of my buddies want to watch the show for the "eye candy sister" on the show.

I have been looking forward to that american hoggers show also and the last i checked it was going to be delayed to start. I guess the weather has been too hot and dry where they are filming in texas.

Hope those Texas dogs dont give us a bad reputation. I am no hog hunter although I've been around it plenty. My father in law was pretty herd core for about 40yrs. He's got damn good dogs and knows what one is. I can tell you that those Texas dogs on the show wouldn"t be able to catch their own ass down here. I've only watched part of one show and was imbarrised so I turned it.

Just remember that they didn't go get the best hog hunters/catchers. They went and got the hog hunters that were best on TV. There's a big difference between the two. Thats just the way it works in the TV world. JMO
