Hi,
Well I am picking up a Dogo X Greyhound pup this weekend and I was wondering how the nose on a Greyhound is, I know that the mother of these pups in a RCD and she can find hogs but I am just curios to see what the Greyhound brings to the table on that.
Do greyhounds have a good nose?

Greyhounds are bred to be sight hound not trail dogs so I don't think you can expect to much out of them in the nose department

Re: Do greyhounds have a good nose?
Interesting question. I think they can scent just as well as most breeds. It just goes against their instinct to run. I've seen staghounds loose coyotes in sagebrush and trail them a bit. I would suspect if you breed for it you might get one that was comfortable enough to run fresh body scent. With hogs this is fairly strong so it might confuse a dog like that. But you never know a few hog guys that follow their dogs closely may have some interesting anecdotes

Hide a bowl off canned dog food a ways up wind and see how long it takes her to find it. Don't expect a dog that hunts primarily by scent. But all dogs have a sense of smell. Some do have better equipment. But it really comes down to their natural desire to trail more then what's on the end of their face. You can encourage the pup to develop their trailing ability if you really want to. Trail dogs trail by choice and then improve by repetition and guidance the game they trail is what they either choose correctly on their own or by discipline and reward applied by the owner as needed. Other non tracking breeds must be induced to trail beyond their natural inclination by praise and reward from the start. Guiding them onto the correct scent and away from unwanted scent is tricky as they don't take mis applied discipline as well as a dog with a strong desire to trail. One thing to rember is all dogs use their nose a great deal daily some just use it more effectively naturally. Hounds will show interest in less amount of and older scent.
Re: Do greyhounds have a good nose?
it varies WILDLY. some have a fair warm nose and some (like mine) can't run a track more than 3 feet before losing it. the only good thing about my grey thinking he can trail is that he only wants to trail fox & cat. so if he gets gamey w/ his nose i at least know there is fox or some kind of cat in the area.
running scent is like writing. some folks can't hardly put a sentance on paper before they quite and some folks can sit down and write a thousand page paper on quantum physics. same with dogs, hounds are writing master's thesis & novels while my grey is too dislexic to write his own name.
OTH i know of fellas whose stags & their crosses have run hot coyote tracks until they jumped him & ran him down. they may even be found in the coyote hunting section from time to time.
