New dogo Advice

Postby ChargingCatcher » Tue Sep 20, 2011 10:30 pm

False info guys
It is actually a pure Dogo female!
5 months old, parents hunt often. Never seen a hog.
I have NEVER trained anything like a dogo or a catch dog before, and I do know Dogos can wind.
For one I was looking for some opinions on a dogo and maybe a little bit on how they hunt.
How I should train one.
Also I have had a bit of a bad luck streak with dogs in general, I have seen the parents work often and well but y'all think Its worth getting this pup?
All input appreciated
Thanks!

Catch dogs are the easiest of any hunting dog to train. Simply walk it on the lead up to the cought hog and encourage it to catch. Shouldnt take moremthan a few hunts to get it on. Once the dog is catching let it off the lead every time a little further to the bay once its going. Just make sure the dog is "lined out" before you let it off. He should be focused on the bay and basically begging you to let him go. Thats the basics. And thats really all there is

Ok,
Also what does it mean to respect the bay? I was told that is important for a dog to learn.
Also how do I teach my dogo to wind/trail?
Anyone have opinions on them as hunting dogs?

get "walk with wick" and train it like a hound (make modifications to the training plan as needed). you'll have a better dogo than 95% of whats being called a dogo in the USA.

i don't know i use AB/PIT crosses for catching . every 3 to 4 year old dogo i've seen had allready lost it's canines not enough jaw strenght in my oppinion . my half ab half pit will wind out of the truck and trail a hot track . but if you dont have to invest any money in it what the heck go for it . then cross it on a goog ol american bred dog .

I dont know if its jaw strength, maybe more of a leverage thing because of the length and where they are holding at or a bad bite. Alot of those dogs seem like jaw or snout catchers. Ive even heard of a few that got their k9's knocked out from being beat against a tree by a hog. I realy dont think they have weak jaw strength

Could be from inbreeding. I've heard that inbreeding over a period of time creates problems with dogs teeth and/or feet. I have had three inbred dogs that had feet or teeth problems, although I can't say for sure what the causes were. Mike

I dont know, Ive seen some linebred/inbred dogos that were almost perfect as dogo's go. The breed is still fairly young, so sometime I think a little more of it would do some good, depends on the dogs though.

Got her today, her parents were imports so shes fresh from argentina.
Her teeth, quite literally meet in a perfect bite, its really nice.
She runs quick and has AMAZING prey drive
Her teeth look perfect, what do you mean about the feet? Just curios

Nice! Good luck with her, whats her pedigree? and or kennel her parents came from?

Some dogo's have splayed out feet, supposed to be nice and tight - I hear you can tighten them up by putting a good layer of pea gravel in their kennel, or run them on soft sugar sand/beach type sand ( if thats what he's talking about )

What part of Florida are you in?

Catcher, as for the feet, I had a Patterdale with slightly deformed feet, the outside toes were much shorter than normal, and when hunted, her whole nail would break off from the base. This breeder is the one who told me about inbreeding/foot problems. Presently, I have a heavy inbred Airedale with misaligned toe bones, (according to x-rays). He is constantly lame. I also had an inbred American Bulldog with tiny little teeth, she was 80 lbs. and had teeth like a small lap-dog. I'm not opposed to inbreeding, but the breeder has to be perceptive about flaws and have some intelligence.

I got her from El Establo Dogos
http://www.elestablodogos.com/
A real nice guy, and real quality dogs in my opinion.
All his dogs hunt, and are very nice looking.
My dog does have sprawled out toes, but I think that just cause of kennel life, an shes a little skinny, not malnourished or anything just a bit on the thinner side, she is very healthy!

And I live in Miami but I hunt the south an west Okeechobee area most often
