Can someone tell me dfg reasoning for these ? And do they have a map out lining them. Trying to follow the way they have them wrote up is silly.

The basic theory is to keep guys from running bear and saying their hunting something else. When you look at the map you'll notice that the control zones are generally the mountainous areas where the most bear hunting is. There is usually a map is the fish and game regs. and on their web site.

If I remember right it was created under the guise of protecting newborn deer fawns. The sad thing is that there were some doggers out running bears in the summer and killing them, thats when we lost the right to train/ exercise our dogs in the portion of Lassen co. west of 395.

The dog control zones were created in the mid-80's in response to the data that DFG collected that suggested high rates of illegal take of black bear...in one fell swoop, a bunch of greedy poachers ruined the opportunity for legitimate houndsmen to enjoy a bear pursuit season, access to the areas now closed in the zones, and the reputation of the hound hunting community with the Department.

In recognition of the fact that the bear population has quadrupled since those days, the Department recommended decreasing the size of the dog control zones a couple of years ago. While there was little influential opposition to this recommendation, the other recommendations to eliminate the in-season closure mechanism and expand bear hunting to portions of San Luis Obispo County created such a fervor that the proposal package was tabled by DFG.
