i have recently started looking into them myself and from all the info i have gathered it is best to get a small puppy so as to show how you want it and to avoild a mistreated one. not neing shown who the pack leader is can cause major problems and easier to start with a puppy. i know they are several different types use but the breed i am more prown to look at is the american bulldog. its temperament is diff than most bulldogs considering its part of the mastiff family and a leggy version of the english. great with children and can dominate a pig. most american bulldog puppies start around 500. look up curdog675 on here. he has a litter on the ground out of some real dogs. i have one spoken for myself. this is only my UNPROFFESIONAL opinion.

Thanks fellers,
They should be ready bout the first of the year.
Shold have some leg under them. Both parents built right, very athletic build, and tons of drive.
I currently have 13 pups, owner of the sire gets first two picks, which leaves 11. Males and females.
If interested shoot me a PM

razor i hunted for 7 years without a bulldog . you can catch hogs with ruff cur dogs. but you will spend alot on vet bills and have alot of down time from those big ruff boars . i got me a bullldog vested him up and never looked back . it's all about heart and a big ol head with plenty of jaw strength to catch and HOLD the hog till it is subdude . my curs would try and catch every hog we come across then if they was gettin whooped would back up and bay . a good bulldog will never give up trying to hold a hog . basically till death us do part .

The American Bulldog is by far the best choice for catching hogs. I used them for 20 years. Now I just use dogs that put enough mouth on them to stop a hog and keep them bayed until I get there. They won't catch but if the hog breaks they grab his butt and shut him down. Then they back off and bay. When I get there I put a 44 mag. bullet in his head. Hardly ever get a dog cut up either.

most any bulldog will try to catch. if you got country pounds w/ low fees go get three or four generic "pitt bulls". or check craigslist for free to good home bulldogs. show them a hog that night at least one will do a good job. if you're going to spend money pin point what you need. if everywhere you got is horrible thick (like taking an hour to chop 100 yards) then you need a small bulldog like a real pit bulldog. if it's open like west TX mesquite scrub & high plains you can go as big as a presa, dogo or pit crossed to dane, mastiff, etc.
the things to keep in mind is that a little dog can still work in the open but a big dog can't go where the little dog can. however when it comes to CONTROLLING a big hog (all else being equal) there is no replacement for displacement. YOU have to figure out what you need more.

honestly i'll probably never consider a pitt. was almost bit once and chased several times by one as a child so i will just be honest and say i'm kinda afraid of them. i've been around dogos and the don't bother me and abs don't bother me just something bout a pit makes me uncomfortable.

You can find ready to go catch dogs at the pound for free. I've gotten all my catchdogs from the pound. Most pounds have a place where you can let the dog run around and see if it will walk on a lead easy. Another thing to do is have them put other dogs in the play area to see how it behaves with other dogs. Beats raising a pup for months and the money to feed in the meantime.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help and ideas. Frankly my black n tan could probably hold on. Thats kind of what he did with the 250lb boar we caught last week. But he is more valuable to me than a pitt would be ya know. Not saying that a pitt would not be more valuable just I run more than just hogs with my hound.

up until recently we only used hounds for hogs. just decided here lately to go hog only. oh yea. had a 1/2 black and tan 1/4 plott 1/4 airedale one time that was absolutly ruff on a hog. hit it like a hammer just didn't have enough hind end to hold him still.

I just picked up a leggy performance type american bulldog and plan on crossing him with my dogo/catahoula cross.
He is great around people but hasn't been exposed to horses or livestock.
He also had no manners and was kept in a yard with a older pit bull. When he got of age he was caught carrying the pit around like a chew toy... So I have my work cut out for me. Great people disposition though.
If you ever wondered what a 100 lb patterdale would do, thats exactly what this one acts like. Lord what was I thnking of?

Hagerman has a close friend that sold a buddy of mine a catch dog (bulldog) for $400.00. That was several years ago.

jkcasey can hook a person up as well.

With haggy's legendary status, as well as his reknowned recognition by Jeff Jones of Boar Hunter Magazine, I would think that he might be willing to help.
