Want a running catch dog
Hey guys I'm looking for a running catch dog around Georgia. Maybe a bull greyhound or bull ridgeback any help?

Re: Want a running catch dog
In my opinion I would go with a cur bulldog cross and here is why. Grey hounds were bred to be sight hounds and don't have the nose, body, and stamina to hold up here the southeastern part of the country. Where as let's say a cur or hound crossed with a bulldog was bred for this environment to hunt and work here. Greyhounds may be faster in a short distance race but a cur or hound cross will last longer running at a slightly slower but yet steadier pace. I tell you this not from personal experience but from what others have told me through trial and error. I have personally seen the grey/ bull crosses in action when we use to have catch dog competitions years ago around where I live. Guys made this cross hoping to add speed but where still getting outran by the good bred bulldogs. Like I said this is just my opinion and nothing else and hope it helps you.

Re: Want a running catch dog
get your self a good strong staghound and put a bulldog over it you wont need an endurance dog as the bull stags will have them caught before they have made a couple of hundred yards and will have plenty of nose to wind scent pigs in the scrub.
Re: Want a running catch dog
All these crosses mentioned would be good catch dogs, but if i were in your shoes there's no question i'd go for the bulldog/ridgeback cross. Here's why:
Size: The bulldog/ridgeback would have real good size/weight to him. I honestly can't think of a stronger catch dog combo. Maybe a dogo cross?
Nose: a Ridgeback should add good scenting into the mix, i'll bet this cross could find a hot hog scent and trail it just fine.
Speed: A ridgeback isn't as fast as a stag, but there not far behind. Got a buddy in FL who Hog hunts his ridgebacks, his male has been clocked numerous times at 45+mph! That's the quickest one i've heard of, but as a general rule, much faster than a cur. If the terrain is like the georgia i remember, a stag would rarely ever get the opportunity to open up full throttle anyway.
Stamina: Ridgeback has gobs more endurance than the stag, and have more in the tank than a Bmc.
Heat Tolerance: Again if it's the Georgia i remember, that's one of the stickiest, hottest places in the U.S! Neither the bulldog or the stag handle heat well. If i were crossing to a bulldog i'd go with something that handles heat better than any other large/ medium size dog. Ridgebacks don't have an undercoat like most dogs, and were designed to handle african heat.
The big question would be if you could get access to a good hunted ridgeback. Way more hunt ready available Bmc's, and Stag's out there!
I know of a few in FL,LA, and TX, but there few and far between.
Good luck in whatever Route you Take!
