I want to start hog hunting

Postby Thommie » Thu Nov 14, 2013 11:19 pm

I live in Southern Indiana and I am a coon hunter. I run Redbones, so I guess you can say I'm a hound guy. The hog bomb just went off here not to long ago. There are not really a lot of people that hunt or run them yet. I was wanting to know what would be best to run them with for my area. hound or cur? I have never hunted around a cur so don't know anything about them.

My advice in an area like your explaining would be hounds! I can only assume the overall numbers are relatively low. If you can manage to get on a good track you'll need the nose and bottom to get it jumped and stay with it to the end. I ran curs for several years and had great luck in dense hog populations. Often times I could find another hog faster and easier than running one down that wanted to run all day. If you are hunting in less dense populations then that runner may be all you get that day, or maybe two, and you can't afford to let him get away. I've had a lot of curs with good noses and good bottom but the percentages go up greatly when you get into the hounds. Just remember if you decide to go the hound route, there are hounds that follow hogs around and then there are hounds that "RUN HOGS"!! Since the hogs in your area haven't been ran a lot they should bay-up pretty good for you. Most people like the curs for their silence, but since the hogs won't be to dog-savy in your area then the open hounds shouldn't be an issue.

Good luck!!

My dads best dog is a redbone, he run this summer from 3:30 am to luchtime.. We caught the hog.. One coldnosed rascal... He will get out from under your feet and get the job done.. He gets really happy though if you don't hunt him in a while, or tune him up before you go.. He is the kinda dog u let people turn their dogs out first, go turn out their after them then go catch the hog.. My younger redbone in the delta this yr. Wouldn't go to him when he was barking, we were trialin him at the time.. He was coldnosing.. He ran it about 45 mins. Crossed the road I put the young dog with him and if he didn't stay with him he was finna eat 22 bullets.. Luckily he stayed, the pup had a voice on him and bottom, just not as much nose.. They run another mile it sounded and looked like on the garmin the pup bayed first.. U talkin bout excited. I got excited. I went in there caught the hog. Seen a hog on the way in there. Different one.. Was finna turn loose that young dog. He drug off my nephew my nephew let go of the leash, and that pupp run that hog with a leash on for probably 2 hours... In big swamps... I was worried he would get tangled up and die mann. Luckily they are doing good, catching hogs now.. I know this is a old post.. Just wanted to share. about the redbones. Im running plots, curs, too. We hunt all yr long, every weekend almost and some durning the week. So we have to have different sets of dogs... I have tried a bunch of breeds . redbones are pretty faithful.. Thank yall god bless

A lot of guys run plotts, catahoulas or mixes. Personally I run catahoulas. They have fair noses and are rough.
Your hounds will do the job but if you hunt the same area much the hogs will learn to start running as soon as the dogs start opening up on track.
Catahoulas tend to be quiet on track.
Since you've got hounds you might start off with them, get them going good then buy a curr or catahoula to throw in to train with your hounds. Then get another and another. The catahoulas will stop a hog faster than a hound which will be much more enjoyable than running for miles to catch up like you will with hounds after the hogs learn the game.

Oconee probably put it as well as it could be put. I run a mixed pack of dogs mostly rigg them with a bluetick. Hogs around where i hunt are fairly inconsistent and that nose sure helps. Il allways have a hound or two around.

I used to coon hunt in Coastal Georgia a lot. The last little while I was there I started on hogs. The redbones I had never had a problem with the hogs they ran into. Hogs are so thick there you cant walk into the woods a mile without running into one. Most all of them southern ga boys run catahoulas on hogs though, seen some that thought they were catch dogs. Real gritty little boogers.

If you are serious and really want to get into it:

Look into cut collars for your dogs, if they get too close a boar will hit them with thier tusks. They will cut flesh like a warm knife through butter. The neck is very vulnerable especially if you have close bayers. If he hits the artery a dog will bleed out faster than you can get to him. A little pricey but well worth the investment.

Wouldn't hurt to invest in a staple gun and learn how to staple wounds either. It will cut your vet bills down

Talk to your local farmers and large land owners. Hogs reak havoc on crops and gardens. No one wants them rooting up everything on thier land either. Offer to split the meat with the land owners, form a bond, and now you have new places to run coons and hunt whitetail. Great way to open yourself up to more opportunity. Some big farmers and landowners will even pay you per tail you bring them.

Good luck!!
