300lb boar and a 3000 dollar vet bill

Postby bigboarstopper » Tue Aug 05, 2014 4:04 am

Busted up my knee a while back and I havent been hunting in the last 2 months. Three weeks ago I needed to go to one of the ranches and install a new well pump so I could fill a pond. So I took a hunter I had taken before with me to lend a hand. In return I told him I we would run the dogs after for a quick evening hunt.

The pump went in quickly and we decided to let the dogs run a small canyon where I thought I would open a valve and fill a smaller pond. We made it to the valve and instead of watching the water flow for the next 30 minutes I thought we would walk a few hundred yards and give the dogs a little exersize since none of us had been out in a while. As I was walking I saw no sign of any kind. The road had been graded the week before and there was no tracks at all in the road.

As we begin to turn around and head back the dogs drop into a little drainage 30 or so yards away and the dogs blow up. We run over and the dogs are baying a huge boar. My newest dog I picked up a month or so earlier runs strait in and gets tossed into the air. My other dogs dont touch it. We sneak in and my hunter takes a shot (357 mag revolver). The hog runs up the embankment on the other side and i fire off a round or two and it keeps going with dogs in tow. My new dog runs up to me and she has taken a potentially lethal wound to her belly from the boar. Within a moment the rest of the dogs have the hog bayed again a few hundred yards away. I take my shirt off and wrap it around my new dogs waist to keep whatever is falling out of her from coming the rest of the way out and run to the bay. I get to the dogs and the hog is simply taking a break in the brush before it makes another run for it. I cant see it but my hunter is working his way through the brush. The hog comes out of the brush and runs through a clearing heading strait twards a solid brush canyon. I shoot at least twice (41. mag single action) and get at least one to connect. The hog stumbles a bit and my hunter fires a few shots of his own. The hog freezes up and flops over.

I check the dogs I have and see if they are ok and run back to where I left my new dog. As im running back I hear another shot (hog got up and started to run). I find my new dog in the same place. I clip a leash to her and the other end to a tree and run back to the truck as fast as I can. I puke twice before I get to the truck and jam back. The new dog is still alive and we load the hog, the dogs and head strait to town. The closest vet is over an hour away. Dog is still alive when we arrive at the vet and they get to work

In the end my hunter had a 300LB boar and I had a $3000 vet bill. Momo is making a full recovery. pocketbook, not so much

Also, this hunter has fantastic luck. This is his second hog hunt. Its also his second 300lb blond boar.

Good hog! I like to get a big one, but some of them ain't worth the damage they cause.

Great story, enjoyed reading it. Too bad on the dog, but glad she is going to make it.

Those big boars are rough. I saw a video on youtube the other day with some hog doggers out of Alabama, man, they get on some monster boar hogs! Way bigger than the ones I get on down here in south Texas.
We raise, train, and hunt Kemmer Stock Mt. Curs for finding and baying wild, feral hogs here in south Texas.
