Re: What ype of bay\strike dog do you use when hog hunting?
Been the past 3 Saturdays. 1st caught 4 as a group. 2nd caught 3 as a group. 3rd I was the only one to catch one.
Most have been about 140-175 # boar hogs. Only one 130# sow in the bunch. My cousin called to let me know they had caught 13 in one day about 2 weeks ago. He said most were around the 75# range, but they did also catch a boar hog that would go about 225#'s. Florida hunting is really starting to get nice with the pleasent wheather.
Hope everyone is doing good,

I think that this is NOT a fair repesentation of what hog doggers are using. Plotts are widly used but most people that I know that hunt accross Texas and Lousaina use some type of cur or Catahoula.

the dog i use to strike and bay hogs is my kemmer. she will also grab them but it tends to be hard for her to hold them being that she is only 35 pounds but don't tell het that she thinks she is a hundred pounds.

yeah for some reason I think the polls are not that accurate for some reason the bear poll went the same wayPlotts 33 percent walkers 33 other breeds 10 persent. When im in maine I look in the back of every truck and the guide we go out with and his helpers and family have more than 30 dogs 90 percent walkers.I have a few books on bear hunting talked to guides out in idaho and ontario and they have mostly walkers.
Have some hog hunting videos been out with a guide who also trains hog dogs I still have not seen a full plott.I thought every one or most guys want a silent trailer. Why the plotts dominate the polls? Is intersting.

I will agree with longshot in that most of the people I know that hunt Fla.,Ms., La. & Tx. use some type of curs. I had always used just curs until the late 70's. In the early 70's La. had a importation of Russian hogs & they ran so bad, that is when I got into Plotts. Another factor is that there are so many hoghunters now as compared to 10-15 years ago that the hogs(both rooters & russians) run like a bat out of hell & most of my friends have all gone to plotts. U will find that the hunters who hunt both bear & hogs will normally have hounds.
Could be alot of the curhunters visit the cur sites more that just hoghunt or maybe they have not moved into the 21st century yet & dont have a computer!!!
Another factor, all these baycontest have ruined the working Catahoula by calling these dogs hog baying ch. & they could no more go find there own hog in the woods than the man in the moon. So alot of people getting into hoghunting go & get their dogs from these so called ch. & the dogs just dont cut it in the woods. Then they go get a plott from hog or bear bloodlines & they have alot better chance of those dogs making a hunting dog.

I have two walker dogs that I use to strike and trail but then I back them with some walker/plott/catahoula/pit cross or 1/2 walker 1/2 pit to stop the runners and have liked the 1/4 pit into them alot better, less staples and vet bills. I also have a mcnab cowdog i use for short range or small places to hunt and also walker trigg cross to bay.

I am one of those guys who run multiple species of game with the same dogs, so I hunt Walkers exclusively.

I use some catahoulas x with aussie shepard. I also have a kemmer x catahoula. She is my lead dog. The aussie x wasnt on purpose but they made some good huntin dogs so I still have a few left in that litter.

I used to use only Catahoulas and Plott's or a cross of the two, but I'm using Queensland Heelers now and it's workin out real good for me. Happy huntin to all.

I don't keep different dogs for different game,if my dogs can't run/catch all the game i want to hunt they go down the road.I use Plotts/Blueticks for everything.
