Two nice Boars

Postby silverton boar dogs » Mon Mar 23, 2009 1:38 pm

I had a great hunt with my wife this weekend, she hunts with me quite a bit, but it always seams that she gets stuck on the tough hunts and misses the good easy ones. Well this one was a good one for her and she had a great time.

We were driving up to one of our places at Matador, just at dark, light breeze........and there was a good boar troting out of the brush and into the wheat. I stoped and kicked out Cat(catahoulaxPlott) and Smoke(CatahoulaxBMC) two finished baydogs. The boar had a little head start but those two girls had a bay in a few minutes. I started to them with Adora and that boar was not going to sit still and was running and fighting, so I sent Adora to them for some help and in about a minute I heard her hit and he was done.

Struck the second boar down a dry creek in the brush. Cat had him held down pretty good but he broke before Smoke could get there to help. I sent Adora after I could hear both bay dogs. I could hear the baydogs getting the bad end of the deal, running and fighting. Adora closed the distance and caught in a steep sided draw. This boar was really trying to give her the business but she was handeling him like an old pro. Used my boar spear for the first time on this one, and all I can say Is WOW spear is a real good deal, very pleased with the result.

Cat had several cuts and looks like the Boar bit her frount leg, but she will be fine with a little R & R.

Emily said that was the best hunt she had been on in a year and the first time for her to see Adora on a big hog, she was quite pleases with the big white dog.

Thanks,
Paul T

Sounds like fun. How about a pic of that boar spear.

Her you go Bill, shaft breaks down to 3 pieces and the blade(12 inches) can be carried on a belt sheath so you can pack it on a wheeler/horse/truck. A friend had it sent from Germany.

Thanks,

I've heard of those things, and a knife maker in Raton is supposed to be making me one, but you are the only one I've heard of actually killing a hog with one.

Paul,
Nice pics, It looks like you have a lot of trust in Adora. I guess she is a lock deown catchdog for you. I am glad and I bet Marvin is proud of her also!

Bronco and Paul
The spears are nice for taking out handicapped hunters and children or first timers that dont want to be TOO CLOSE to the hog. It works great if you can get a wounded warrior in a wheelchair to the bay(thats when it shines)
BUT I have found that they are TOO DANGEROUS for the dogs for me to use on a regular basis. I dont want someone waiving it around my pack of dogs if they are cuaght.

It is also dangerous to the people going through the brush. It is hard to handle a long object in the thick vegetation and must be sheathed to avoid STICKING A PERSON walking\crawling in front of the spear holder

I have heard of people using them for sticking hogs caught in snares and drags with no dogs.

I also think it would be fun when hunting ALONE to stick them out of a 2-dog bay with NO catchdogs! No your talking

Thanks James, Adora is turning into a wonderful catch dog. She caught another 180lb boar this evening, bay was in a rough canyon, no way to lead her down, to steep, so I sent her from the top. She went about 600yds out and 500ft down and held well 'till I could get to her. Her style is very good, always has the whole ear in her mouth has never regriped and has never let one go. I have been having to choke her off the last 6 hogs she gets harder every catch. And she is realy fast, she will run out frount with the curs if I let her and she has a good nose, been winding pigs on her own. Leading her in is tough as she now weighs 100lbs.

The spear is pretty good I think, but I don't want anyone but me using it. I like it for sticking hogs that are in a mud hole that I am going to sink a foot deep in. I have been i some bad spots in the mud, with a big hog by myself.

Thanks,
Paul
