Alright now I have spoken to everyone who is some sort of official in Oregon,that has to do with fish and wildlife,about these awfull land raping ferile swine and nobody has a straight forward answer. NO SURPRISE THERE!! These types usaully don't have a straight forward answer to anything with the acception of $$$.
So I'm leaving it to you guys to give me a clue as to weather these pigs really do exist here in Oregon and where? I'm not asking you to let me in on your sweet-spot. I just want to know where a guy can go and do some scouting on his own and hopefully poke one of these elusive creatures with an arrow.
Any help would be more then a guy can get from the village idiots in charge at ODFW.

I can tell you that hogs are prolific, travel several miles a day and if you havent got them yet you will in a few years!

With hogs it is either FEAST or FAMINE.

Madras, grantspass, and burns oregon. Jay hoyt the ex-cattle barron, brouth a bunch up from california in the late eighties and early nineties. the goverment has tried to get rid of them but there are still some up on the silvies river, and homes creek near ex-senator bob smiths home stead. The refuge south of burns had a real population but they flew it and killed most of them two years ago. I heard a rummor that one was killed last week at the JMK ranch in crane oregon 20 miles south of burns. The fairy tale on that pig doesn't add up but anything is possable. I know some people will race over to burns thinking they will kill a pig here, not very likely. in twenty years I have never seen one and only heard of 3 that were killed without the use of a plane. Good luck and if you find some I hope you kill them all.

Thanks for the reply High desert hounds. I just moved away from Redmond last june and I sure miss the nice weather over there.I have been told there are some hogs down south but i just have not been able to locate them yet.With a little persistance though and I will get into them!

chuck. and to any of those searching for hogs in central oregon.i spent a whole day on researching areas in central oregon. even in the ashwood area where some had previously escaped from. i recieved good results from the locals there with permission to hunt on private ground.the hogs had been there for sure, but to me it doesn't look like good hog habitat. i'm not sure if i would know what good habitat is supposed to represent. to me there just isn't enough feed to hold an animal close in. it looked like they travel long distances in search of feed and cycly through periodically.if a guy was serious about this i guess you could feed/bait them and hold them in close. coupled with the vast size and limited road access it is a waste of time.coyote hunting is good. i would recomend taking a predator call and squak in a dog. i struck a deal with a rancher to cat hunt. so all was not lost. i'm guessing about the time i have just started a bobcat i will be waist deep in hogs ,with no way to avoid them. just my luck!

I dont know about the hogs up there in Oregon . But I do know the ones here in Northern Cal. have such a large range they can be hard to pin point. I have a ranch that I hunt from time to time thats 35,000 acres. Most of the time there is 1 to 2 groups of hogs there. But there is times when its very wet or very dry that they move off of this anch and on to other ranches. I had an old time rancher tell me one time that the hogs will cover 40,000 to 60,000 acres as a group so with out taking to the air can be a real challenge to fine. What we do here when its wet look for the food. Oak's, Fruit and nut trees as well as fig. And when its warm look for water here as soon as its up around 80 they take to the mud. If you can find spots around water look at the trees see where they have been rubbing. If you can find lots of rubs you know they are in that area. As for the rooting I have seen very fresh rooting as if they were there that night or evern the same day and they have not moved back in to the same area for over a year. Hope some of this can help. livetohunt, if they ain't eating grass they aren't eating. no fruit, oaks,nuts, grass and water is about all they have here.juniper trees and sagebrush. looks like they really travel. probably more so in search of feed when scarce.thanks for your help and input. the up side is when looking for hogs it beats watching t.v. lol....

They do eat grass also bugs they root up. I have seen them in spots where I couldnt find anything they would eat but they are there. I dont know what makes them travel as much as they do. Might be more the hunting pressure they get cause around here there is so much food for them and they still move non stop.

Thanks for the info guys this will help me in my pursuit of the hogs.You are right again Mike about looking for hogs being better then sitting at home watching T.V.....Grrrr thats a waste of life.From all of the information that I have came across,these feril hogs seem to be in the same category as coyotes as far as their ability to survive in the worst of conditions.I know there is very limited food resources in the central part of our state for these critters to eat yet they are there.With a little paitience and a lot of constant scouting one day one of them hogs will be in the sights of my bow,and then it will all be worth it.

Either this month or last month NRA's American Hunter magazine had a little two-page article about them. They referred to University of Georgia's wildlife disease study and showed the UofG study map - the article had info similar to dwelz's National Geographic info. I just pulled the map out a bit ago (NFSMS: National Feral Swine Mapping System) and it's been updated and shows hog populations where NRA's map of a couple months ago did not show. The latest map also shows NO populations in Oregon where NRA's map did show a population, I think around John Day. Chuck - Maybe you got the fish & game people mad and they just decided to say they don't have any hogs in the state. (Ha) I'll bet they're there.

keeep the info. coming guys.I have learned more here in a short little while then I ever did through emails and telephone calls in the past 6 years through the state officials. No dan kluthe I was really pretty patient and decent with all of these game management fellows when i talked to them in the past but not anymore! From now on I will be up front and honest and tell them my opinion of their capabilities (or should I say incapabilities) I have grown somewhat disgusted with the Oregons fish and wildlife game management procedures but thats another topic for another day.

I have been hearing about some feral animals in North Central including hogs.

You can also find hogs in the Kent, Antelope, Shaniko area. I don't think anyone in that area is coveting spots or hogs, as all they do is rip things up, especially springs. Most ranchers I know in the area trap and shoot them and will let you hunt so long as you respect their land.
