anyone in california wanna go to bat with me on this one?

Postby bigboarstopper » Thu Sep 24, 2009 10:35 pm

I would like to somehow get dfg to at least look at the use of a knife as a legal method of take for pigs in california. I really dont know how to go about it or mabye CHC would be worth soliciting as a frontman for this endevor. I would like your info and opinion.

Ive been stuck on the legality of knives for the take of hogs because its a safer method than a gun when using dogs on hogs for many reasons. Also when compared to an arrow whats the difference between a well placed broadhead and a knife? A precision placed knife is better than a medeocre shot because the knife will kill quicker almost all of the time. Blood loss is extremely quick followed by loss of conciousness and death. It may be the most gruesome and pollitically incorrect method but I truely believe its usually the most humane and safest method while using dogs.

Id like to somehow get this in front of a california department of fish and game commision or some legislator. I already know its a lost cause but I cant help myself. Id be willing to make myself look like an ass at a dfg commision and speak on the topic. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. At least I would get some experience in how these matters work and mabye work on getting GPS systems legalized in california (something they may consider) when compared to killing hogs with a knife......

I'm not in CA, so I can't help you except wish you luck. When did CA outlaw sticking them with a knife. I have a good friend who hunted CA 20 years ago, he stuck everything with a knife.

Good luck

California is a different country. They have their own laws that I hope Floridians never see first hand.

I think using a knife on hogs became illegal once california considered them a game animal and began selling tags for them. When this happened im not sure, but I think the states that allow the use of a knife either dont consider hogs game animals or didnt specify a method of take requirement when they recodnised them as one.

bigboarstopper,

CHC is working with the Department to address the GPS situation, so no need to divert your attention from the knife issue.

If memory serves me correctly, methods of take are managed by statute rather than regulation, so a modification would need to be facilitated through the Legislature via a bill rather than through a proposal to the Commission.

To better the odds of success, I'd recommend you do the following:
1. Establish precedent: The legislature is more likely to support something in California if it is already legal in other states. Determine the extent to which the use of knives is legal for the taking of hogs elsewhere. Identify all of the states where it is legal.
2. Address bias, ignorance, and pre-conceived notions: The legislature is more likely to support something they truly understand, especially when an idea is supported by subject matter experts. A knife is commonly used to kill domestic hogs once they are electrocuted into unconsciousness, so I would dig up supporting documentation regarding its use as an authorized slaughter method (a likely source would be the USDA) and any other supporting documentation from organizations like AMVA. Also, detailed statement(s) signed and notorized by one or more veterinarians attesting to the humane aspects of the use of a knife for the taking of a hog would be an important first step to preparing to solicit testimony before the various committees in the legislature.

Once you get this, feel free to contact me and we can talk about the next step.
