Hounds work well as calls. I believe Fox Pro has a downloadable hound clip. A pup ki-yi works as well. A couple friends whacked 3, started with a Fox Pro hound clip to get them trotting in, then fishinshed with a rabbit squall to get them running. Shot the first one at 50 yards and they kept coming, last one dropped at 30 yards. I've heard of a couple guys in the Panhandle that would mouth howl like a wolf to get a response (I guess this is less intrusive than say a coyote howl) then would spot and stalk. If you want to hunt the Bovil/Elk River area I can point you towards some high density areas.

Really you guys call wolves in to the sound of a pack of hounds?

Yep, a group of guys that I know of in North Idaho had been hearing wolves howl on a ridge consistantly above their work camp. One of them ran to town, grabbed one of his hounds and something for it to bay on and staked them out in a clearing. 45 minutes later a pack of 9 came in, only 1 made it out and it probably had holes in it.

I strongly encourage using hounds or digital hound calls for wolves. Every little bit to create fear in wolves will help keep our hounds safe.

Please come hunt and kill as many wolves in Idaho as you can. I agree with the other Idah o guys we are mostly newbies at hunting them. I have killed one wolf and it was in southeast Alaska. A freind from high school moved up there and I hunted with him. He used his voice to howl and they came running down a creek chute and started howling and yipping like crazy. We used a dying rabbit call and they bee lined it for us. I shot one and the rest scattered pretty quick. I have tried the same stuff here but have not had success. I shot that wolf at 300 yards and in north idaho it is too thick to get that kind of shot. I think also that I have not been waiting long enough after reading some of the posts here. Pretty much been houndogging and if i cut fresh wolf tracks trying to call em in. We need to be in this together or most of our hunting will be screwed up. out of state wolf tags only 31.75!

Fat,

I almost would be willing to bite at that cheap price but out of state means alot of scouting. Id love to have a big ol wolf pelt hanging with my bobcats. But I got a feeling it'd be a costly endeavor.

the tag looks cheap but how much is an out of state license. And I'm wondering for us out of state guys if there are any guides going out on wolves. I dont really like guided hunts but might be the way to go if we came for a long weekend
