Running Deer with Dogs?

I'm not new to Deer hunting, and I've been hunting other critters with dogs for a few years now. Never hunted deer with dogs though.
How does it work? Sort of a loaded question I guess, but looking for info on types of dogs, breeds, open/closed, baying/catching?, etc.
Obviously you dont want the dogs to run the deer straight into the next county. How do the deer run? How do the dogs turn them? How long are the races? How many dogs and shooters do you use typically?

You can use anything that will run a deer to run them. A big dog will run them and a small dog like a beagle will push them. Typically the does will run with a lot of turns and in no particular direction. The bigger bucks line out and leave in a hurry usually. Depending on how the land lays is how many hunters you can use. Everybody thinks of it as cheating to use dogs, obviously they haven't tried to hit a deer running full speed jumping a road. It is a whole lot more of a challenge than them walking around and waiting for the perfect shot, I promise.

Thanks for that. Just trying to visualize how the dogs run the deer and how it all comes together. I have Jagdterriers that I hunt on Hogs, coons, birds etc and was going to break them off of deer, but have not done it yet. Was thinking maybe I want them to run the deer. Just tossing around the idea and got to wondering how it all works.
We hunt the mountains of SoCal for Mule Deer, not farm land white tails

I once hunted deer with dogs in Ontario Canada. The guys up there would usually use just one or two. It was big blocks of timber and you would stand near skid roads or power line cuts in the timber. The deer were always far enough a head of the dogs that they would just come trotting through. Deer still use the wind to their advantage and would circle back into the swamps without coming into the open in they smelled you. It was a lot of fun and would love to do it again sometime.

We use hounds down here in the Southern swamps to run the briar goats, the woods are thick and it can be a great race if you like to hear a bunch of hounds, I've done it all my life and would probably quit hunting if all I could do was still hunt.

Here in south ms we run them with dogs. Yeah any dog can run a deer out of sight but if you want to "run" a deer you need some deer dogs. We use running walkers. Some use beagle crosses and tree hound crosses but I like hearing a pack of high tenor mouth running walkers put the heat on an ole buck on a frosty morning. I've had deer dogs my whole life. I don't care if I kill a buck or not as long as I get to chase him. We generally find a track put a trail dog on it with anywhere from 4 to 15 other hounds and try to jump him. Or if no track just turn a pack out and rabbit jump them. Standers are spread out around the roads and trails and try to head him off when you get him running. Good times and good friends and good running.
