Looking for suggestions on foot problem

Postby Eric Muff » Sun Oct 18, 2009 8:11 pm

I have a 7 year old Appy with a foot/skin problem.
About a month ago we took the ponies out for a day in the mountains and I noticed the Appy had what looked like an "irritation" on the back of his foot just above the heel.
I looked it over and determined it was nothing serious.
We did the ride and all went well with no signs of problems with the foot.
I kept an eye on it over the next few days and decided that it may have been a slight rope burn in the 1st joint above the heel, right where you would expect it to be.
The problem was that the condition started to spread like a rash but only it took the form of a scabby looking irritation. We had a week of pretty wet weather and the horses had to suffer it out in a small corral that was super muddy about a month prior to this because I was out of town on business and the kid who was looking out for them didn't know any better.
I figured that it may be some sort of "bug" so I debridded the area scraping off the scabs and applying a sulpher based anti-biotic salve which I had used previosly for skin irritations. This has had no effect after a couple weeks and now I am puzzled, any thoughts boys?

I have used a pink spray I got from the vet called "Topical Fungicide" made by VEDCO with good success. The active ingredient on the bottle says: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.15%
