Even got Desert Dawg in on the action.

You'd better give that colt it's foot back, it's gonna need all four legs to hold that big ol boy up!

Here are a few pics from the last year raising a mustang filly. She was brought to us by a friend from the neighboring reservation. He said the mare was letting her two year old colt drink all the babies milk. He also said that other mares in the herd were taking it from its dam and tossing it around by the neck. At three days old she was too weak to even pick herself up to try and nurse. He finally took her from the herd and brought her to us to raise. My girlfriend and I raised her inside the house on milk replacer and nursed her back to health. Eventually she moved to the dog yard and then out to the farm with the some of our other horses and mules. She is now a little over a year and doing well. Hope ya'll enjoy the pictures.

Why do you tie one of the rear feet on the horses you're breaking? Some form of buck prevention I assume, but haven't seen it done before. Also, what about the colt with the rope around its neck? Was this just before he could be haltered?

Zachvu, its just a process in breaking the ponies... but the rope on the back leg is the last step before we ride them. They learn where their safety is, boundries and to give to any pressure regardless of where it is applied, even the flanks. By the time Poco has done his magic on them they are usually pretty good. There has only been one horse that we didn't ever ride and another we didnt ride on the first session. Most of them come around pretty good.

I can vouch that this form of starting a horse is pretty nice when you get tangled up in barbed wire chasing cows or your horse catches a leg as you crossing some downed fence. I have never had one of my horses that we have broke get cut up in the fence or even try to fight it, once they figure out they are caugh they just stand there. The farriers say that they are pretty dang nice to shoe also.

I wish i could put a better handle on a horse but they are idiot proof for us and the things that we like to do.

Dan, thats pretty cool deal with the baby. You'll probably never have to worry about having to catch that one....just getting ran over when its playtime.

Thanks for posting the pics and add more if you get a chance.

Take care, jason
