You can keep this training very simple and get a great handle on your dogs even without horses or mules around.
Find a stretch of country road with little or no traffic or even the local ball field, stick those tracking collars on just incase and go for a walk. You will be amazed at how quickly those dogs will start to respond even quicker with the Tri-Tronics.As your confidence grows so to will your ability to control your dogs farther and farther away,I like to keep em pretty tight to me (30-50 yds makes me pretty comfortable)any farther than that I feel a little uncomfortable particularily in thick cover.
Once you get control of those longears in this type of situation you have crossed the threshold to enlightenment in your new found capabilities as a houndsman and will realize shortly that the boundaries that you run into in this business are the ones you set for yourself!
Goodluck.
All men die,few truly live......dog it!
