Chest pack for a horse?

Postby Stubby » Thu Dec 17, 2009 6:46 pm

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen any kind of chest pack in use to strap on a breast collar or hang over the neck or saddle horn. Only place I ever saw one was on an Australian film "Rabbit proof fence". I'm thinking It might be a good place to hold 2 days worth of hay cubes if it didn't swing or chafe to much. Seems I already have a horn bag or two, a jacket or rain slicker and the saddle bags are usually full as well and grass can be pretty tough to find where I ride.
I now use a large canvas mail carriers bag to carry a sleeping bag which is pretty bulky to pack behind the cantle. It slings over the horses neck and since the bag only weighs 3 lbs and has a wide strap it doesn't put much pressure on the horses neck and the bag rides right in front of the horses chest nicely out of the way. No need to swing your leg sky high or over the neck when mounting or having it interfere with a day pack if you are wearing one. It works so well I wouldn't mind finding something a little stronger out of some heavy cordura.
I'm going to the dogs.

I've got a buddy in Australia that spends a lot of time on horseback. I've seen Rabbit Proof Fence, but don't remember the pack. I do remember a similar pack in the more recent movie "Australia", and we talked about it a while back. He wasn't a fan of those packs and said they get in the way. I can get you some more information if you're interested. Just PM me.

Hey Larry maybe it was Australia, just remember it was some Aussie film.
Thing is there's not much to get in the way of up there.
PM sent
