Looking for a Jack

I picked up a percheron mare last summer to cross with our quarter horse studs, I want to get some good ranch horse colts out of her. But after reading all the post about mules and a little influence from my wife I am thinking of breeding her to a jack. If I do this is want to breed to a proven jack with a good mind. I was wondering if anyone has one or knows of anyone that has one and what a stud fee is. I am located in wyoming but don't mind traveling to a close state.

Get a copy of Western Mule Magazine...look them up on the net and every year they do a Jack special issue. I'm sure you can buy back issue of it and there will be good jacks near you. Then call around and find what you like. Lots of good jacks out there. If it were me I would breed to a finer boned jack unless you want a big heavy draft mule.

Just go to Mammoth jacks at stud online and you can shop them and get chilled semen sent to your vet to AI Big Mama. That would be the easiest and most cost effective way to go unless you find a true quality jack close by. Get a jack that is proven and there are some darn good ones out there.
I have been around several Percheron mules and let me tell you they are nice. The US Forest Service in Colorado has Draft Mules that will knock your eyes out and these things can carry more weight than beleivable and slide up them trails like flat ground.

You might try Machias on this site. He's been involved with mules for some time now.

Get ahold of Jerry Jeppson in Crowheart, WY. He will steer you right. He's been doing it for awhile. Bit eccentic but a real good honest, let me say that again...honest individual.
Watch horse traders with both eyes. Good luck.
