Bob Ray saddle

Postby Bdog » Tue Mar 30, 2010 2:07 pm

Anybody riding his saddles? Good and bad as I have a chance to pick up a used one but a ways to travel just to look. He is out of central UT.

Thanks
Bruce

Bobby Ray is not only a craftsman but an artist as well. If you are talking about the saddle on KSL that is for sale I would buy it myself if I had the money. Bob and his wife used to work for Charlie Leeder and can talk lion hunting as well. I had him build a packsaddle and the workmanship was excellent. I recently met a lion hunter from Summit Utah who wanted some information on the Az strip. In visiting with Craig, I found that he is a brother in law to Bob Ray. I have wanted a riding saddle from Bob for years but I am not patient and he is usually booked at least 18 months. He makes his own saddle trees and the first time I visited his shop he was outside making rawhide to cover a tree. I have him build the cruppers that I use on my mules.

I do have another comment about the picture of the saddle in the ad. I noticed that it doesn't have a rear jockey. It is also hard to tell how the saddle is rigged from the picture. My favorite mules are out of TWH mares and have a lot of movement in the front elbow. I have found that for me the three way in skirt riggings like DR Schrader builds into his mule bar saddles have yet to sore any of my mules. Saddle makers are possibly even more opionated than houndsmen and trappers. Each of them thinks that their way is the best or only way.

I went to Ely and picked up the saddle, britchen, breast collar and a head stall. Patti and Larry are very nice folks to deal with. Got on it this morning for about three hours and seems to fit just right and sets well on the mule.

Thanks for all the input.
