I recently got my first horse to start runnin dogs off of here in western colorado but since ive got him the dry deserty place i keep him is starting to crack and split his hoofs severely. i had him shoed and he threw a shoe the first time i rode him after. im now putting some form of lynseed oil on him but it doesnt seem to be working. its getting bad enough that i dont think he should be rode but what can i do? do they make a shoe or anything that will recover his hoofs before huntin season?

Sounds like you got it handled. If you bring a horse from a moist humid environment to a dry one you generally have similar issues the best thing is time and good trimming shoes aren't really helpful while the hoof wall is drying out and shrinking. You might barefoot him for awhile then ride him in boots if his hooves aren't quite tops. Its hard to be sure without looking. Hope it works out

I have a few questions...
1. How often was and is the horse getting trimmed\shoes?
2. Has the horse had a history of foot issues?

I was always taught that you look at the foot before the rest of the horse.. more so for using horses than arena horses. Depending on the crack and with trimming\shoeing every 6-8 weeks you could have the crack healed in as little as a few months to a year. But expect this horse to always need hoof care on a regular bases as he will be more likely to have troubles. If you look up endurance riding supply sites there are many boots to choose from. Long Riders Gear is the name of one.

I just took a mule out of an irrigated orchard and sold her to my friend. He keeps her in a corral and it was hot and dry all summer long. Same thing happened. This can be a serious issue if the crack reaches the coronary band at the top of hoof and needs to be attended to before it gets that bad. Anyways after a trim when the hoof began to grow out it started to grow apart from itself at the crack damn near trying to become two hooves. We put a shoe on it to minimze the spreading and allow it to grow back together. The shoe actually holds the hoof walls and doesn't allow them to spread. There are also ways you can make clips and nail it over the crack to prevent spreading. These aren't fixes just ways to prevent it from getting worse. The best thing you can do is get a GOOD farrier over there quick.

Your farrier should be able to set you straight lickity split, If he hasn't already I would think about finding a new one.
