  WE KEEP ALL TYPES OF MULES ON HAND. ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE CALLED AND ASKED IF WE RAISE THEM. WE DON'T. WE BUY THEM AS YEARLINGS AT BREEDER SALES IN TENNESEE AND KENTUCKY. ALL THE MULES WE KEEP AND START WILL BE SOUND, EASY TO CATCH, AND EASY TO HANDLE. WE DON'T WASTE TIME ON MULES WITH PROBLEMS OR MULES THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS STARTED. :)

It's easy to see that you have a eye for quality mules. Since you picked the best mules out. The only difference in the mules you picked and the colts is we have had them mules up in the barn, feeding and riding them steadily. We have about 200 acres we run our mule colts on, and as we sell the older mules, we bring a few more to the barn and start working with them. We have kept JJ. (#8) and Kate (#12) around to break new mules with, and to trash break dogs with, also. But, it has created a problem for our young mules. It's too easy to catch and ride the older mules and neglect the younger ones, so we decided to sell them. So, we will either--ride the young ones or walk. We are not about to walk.

No, none of them should carry that much weight. In reality only the five year old should be doing any regular riding, IMO. Mules develop mentally and physcially much slower then a horse. The 2 year olds should never be carrying a rider, IMO. The 2 and 3 year olds should just be learning to handle things in the woods and maybe a light pack saddle for short easy trips. Once they hit four years old then they can start carrying a rider and handling more difficult trails. Their knees are not fully developed at 2 and 3 years old. At 5 years old mules can handle pretty much whatever you throw at them physically. Most muleskinners will tell you a mule shouldn't be born until they are 8. Mentally that is when they really start maturing. Mules typically live 15 years or so longer then a horse, 35 to 40 years old is not unheard of, there's no rush. Personally I wouldn't even consider buying a mule that was broke to ride at 2. That's just future lamness issues waiting to happen, IMO.

Very sound advice on when to start a mule. I have been looking for a mule for six months, just picked one up last week or I think I would be headed your way.
