ok so im 14 almost 15 umm im going to be getting a black mouth cur soon and i want to hnt him well just like to know should i get a started one or not thanks

glad your on here. a started dog vrs a pup depends on your experience level and what your able to afford. the good is if it's started you can see it in action and get a preview of the dogs ability and desire along with its weaknesses and strengths. another plus is with that breed it helps to KNOW it is gamey and has a good idea what you will be asking it.

the bad is you'll usually pay more for it and if the seller isn't completely honest you maybe getting a less then top prospect. this could happen with a pup to. it may have bad habits that it will have to be broken from. it may not bond with you as good as a pup.

who do you currently hunt with or plan to hunt with? what do they run and on what game? why did you select the breed you did are hunting bred black mouth curs common in your region hunting the game you plan to hunt? remember starting out with a proven strain in your area helps avoid problems a imported or impractical breed may cause.

well acoording to my mother thats the only dog i can get and this would be my first hunting dog is the black mouth cur a good choice? idk anything lol but im willing to learn

can't say it's a bad choice. in your area it's probably a pretty decent choice if you make sure both parents are hunted pretty regular the one main down fall many new buyers run into is putting price above value . find as many people on here as you can from your area and see who they tend to recommend who runs bmc's. I can't say there is anyone who does but short of that contact the national breed club and explain your looking for a first time dog and that it has to be breed primarily as a hunting dog. the only draw back to multi purpose breeds is often while one breeder breeds for hunting qualities first another maybe focused on pet or other qualities. put a post in the cur section on this board asking for help

Hi, Im from washington as well, and I tend to see many walker hounds around here, but I own blue tick/walker cross and even a black lab/walker cross. Good luck with whatever you decide and you will def learn a great deal on here. Where in Washington are you from?

I actually grew up in federal way, went to federal high school LOL small world. I dont see why you couldnt go out with us come hunting season, my hunting partner is 15 years old and he is a great kid. August 14th and 15th we are having a water trial in matlock washington (not far from me) and what it is, is a whole bunch of people bring there hounds and pay to do "mock" hunting races. there is a bear race, water race (thats where the hounds are in a starting box like race horses, and they chase the "coon" across the pond and tree the coon at the end, whoever does that the fastest wins) and even a treeing contest, just thought you might be interested in coming on out and seeing how its done, I would help you out with any questions etc. You can camp the whole weekend, there is a cookshack on the premisis (I actually do 99% of the cooking and the judging of the contests by the way), I will be up there from thursday before till late sunday night. By the way Im kelly from olympic tree hound club, based out of shelton. Im a single mom to 3 young hound hunting girls (my boyfriend doesnt do the hound thing) nice to meet ya, and feel free to ask any questions. well that depends on the hound! I have had some that can get it all done by themselves, then again I have had some that needed to have some help. Depends on the individual dog, some are great trackers, some are great tree dogs, some are great kill dogs etc. Sometimes you get lucky and get all of those wrapped up in one great package. Some coons need to have more than one dog on them to tree in the first place! My bluetick/walker cross does get the job done all by himself, but we still sometimes have a hard time treeing some coons just because with one dog some coons dont feel pressured enough to tree! good luck and I hope you can come on out to the trial and see what Im talking about
