Hello From The UK....

Postby Pete E » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:53 pm

Just found the site via a google search on the Garmin Astro...

I'm not a hound hunter as such (hunting with hounds as you guys know it is currently banned in the UK :( ) but I am a very keen deer stalker (ie rifle hunter).

Over here, stalkers often use single dogs to follow up wounded deer.

I first saw the Garmin Astro being used up in Scotland to aid the recovery of a Sika deer I had shot less than perfectly.

The guy who had the unit was using it on a Lakeland terrier and it was a real eye opener to see it working...The dog followed the wounded beast about a mile and eventually brought it to bay in a small stream...

Given the country was hilly and covered with dense Sikta spruce forestry, there was no way we would have found the beast (perhaps not the dog either as it was tuckered out) without the unit.

Sika deer are notorious for running, even when dead on their feet from a well placed shot, so this unit was a god send for the guy concerned..

Not sure if he had an American unit or imported the Nordic version as they are currently not on sale here in the UK...

I was a little dismayed to read of all the problems you guys are having, but it shouldn't be an issue for us, as we don't use radios much, beyond FRS type models...

Regards,

Peter

gps system is great for blood trailing and running; i have several bluetick hounds and one is exceptional for trailing blood and use gps with him. hunting with hounds partly originated in UK, surprised it is banned.

Its nice to see you on here spread the word to any dog fanciers you know. We have good international traffic with english speaking countries and decent with some cultures. That still use hounds. Oddly the germans don't show very often even with their interest in canines. I frequent your english hunting forum and it is modeled similar to ours but the lurchers and hound threads are dwindling sorry about your increasing restrictions. I suppose you could holiday here and enjoy a hunt. Deer hunting "rifle" is probably the best in the americas right now with the numbers and species available. Blood tracking is really growing in the eastern us with high deer pops in urbanized areas.
