Need one
There is a guy i know that said he may be able to get me a free hound. I am 16 and have wanted a hound for along time now. The only problem is my dad is afraid he will kill our black lab and howl all night. Is there any way to train your hound not to howl or bark alot in your back yard?

Re: Need one
Sure there is, lots of people keep their hounds quiet.
Just like any other dog just takes some training (consistent negative reinforcement). Hounds are a little more tough to train than your average lab. Lots of people use bark collars; which cost a bit but is probably do'able in your situation with just one dog.
Also, the more you exercise the hound, hunt it, run it, etc. the less need it will have to bark. Barking is generally their way of beating off boredom.
Also, hounds generally are not super aggressive so I wouldn't worry to much about lab vs hound fights. Chances are the hound will bond with the lab; especially if you get a hound puppy (assuming the lab isn't an older/mean dog itself).
Good luck with the hound, its a very fun lifestyle.

Re: Need one
I have a male lab in the same kennel as my 2 male hounds, no problems because they don't fight unless i say so!

So if your dad is not cool with a hound tell him it will be a great way to keep you off the couch and off the demon video games.
haha. And it will also give you fella something else to do together. I take my nephew and neice out all the time and they want hounds now. I think if you show him that the hound is not like a crazed pitbull then he mite be turned around. Not that all pits are crazed.

Before you get yourself a hound go to wallmart and get a bark collar they are 30 dollars and well worth it. I have them on all my dogs and they don't make a peep. They work awsome and I have some hard headed plotts. I have not had a dog that it doesn't work on. Your dad might just be to stuborn to talk him in to it I don't now.

Re: Need one
I had the same problem when i was sixteen i wanted a bird dog so bad my teeth hurt. my parents didn't want anything to do with a dog. Finally just committed to a puppy and and started bringing home dog food and a kennel and a dog house. Slowly they started warming up to the idea. When it was time to go pick the pup up they even drove with me to go get it. Two years later i was introduced to hounds and i was hooked. I was also offered a free hound and jumped on it and brought it home. To this day they still don't agree with me on my dogs. I since have gotten married and moved out. But as long as you make your own money to take care and feed the dog i dont see the problem. Most the time they will come around. I've even got my dad to a few lion trees.
