New to here and got my first hound

Postby tbam » Fri Feb 01, 2013 1:41 am

Hello everyone, new to hounds and this forum. Just picked up my first hound. I got a year old blue tick male from Oscar Thomas. He is really skinny, what do you guys recommend for dog food?

Welcome, and nice looking hound. He doesnt look all that skinny in the pic, but if you need a dog to out a little I would feed him a good high performance dry food. Look at the ingrediants, you want the first ingrediant to be meat and bone meal. Then I would also feed a little canned dog food with it. Just something that has worked for me. Good luck!

He don't look skinny to me either but you defiantly need to feed a hard hunting dog quality food or he will not have the energy to preform.

Remember these dogs are endurance athletes so just think of how their human counterparts look. Lean with lots of muscle definition but not bulky, as long as he has lots of energy to run then he is doing ok.

He looks pretty young still--not too skinny, just gangly. Whats his name and what are you planning on hunting with him?
What you feed ought to depend on how hard you are running him. Step up the fat content when you are running him hard. A kibble with 23% protein is enough unless you are hunting him very hard and almost every day. A hound can easily burn off quite a few pounds with just a one-day 25 mile run, so you may need to increase his rations after a long hunt, but cut back again if you aren't hunting him every day. Too much protein and fat that isn't getting burned off will be hard on his liver and kidneys.
Looks like he's living in the house. Its ok to supplement dry kibble with table scraps--just go easy on the sweets. Dog spit is a lot easier to wash off the plates than that dried on egg-yolk, so mine get to do the prewash on all the dishes.... Just make sure he doesn't get the idea that its ok to steal from your plate when your back is turned.

As a matter of fact , he looks about the way he should. Just don't let him get to that cat he is eyeballing in the cage,or he'll be banished to the barn after the shambles they'll make in the house. LOL
I can make 'em go and I can make 'em Whoa !
God makes 'em do.
I'll take Jesus, you can have the field
