New from Nevada

Postby High Desert » Mon Feb 10, 2014 6:07 am

Its been a lot of years since I hunted with hounds. Over 40 years ago. I hunted with the Shasta County Houndsman , from California. A lot of Changes since we could run Cats and Bear. We ran mostly Coon and I participated in a lot of competition hunts. I have always had fond memories of those days and have always thought about getting back into it.
I hunted with Waldo Haley from Redding California and he hunted with one Dog a Plott named Sam. All my Chukar hunting Dogs have been named Sam.
Not sure what you can do in California anymore. I live in Nevada but have a boy who lives in the Mts not to far from Nevada in California.

He has asked me often about getting a hound to hunt with....................

I new a hounsman from Montgomery Creek that Waldo Haley was good friends Also there was Buckey Stone that Waldo talked about that was a Bear hunting guide. I would guess that most are dead now. I know Waldo Died some years ago. When I hunted with him he either tied or came in first place in every Coon competition he was in. He was always getting offers for his Plott "Sam" $1200 back in 73 was a ton of money. He did buy a Black and Tan when Sam got old named Tom....................Waldo did not own a pickup and so the dogs would load up into the Trunk of his car and off we would go.

I don't know anything about Sams breeding. All I new was he was a Plott His wife is still alive I could ask her. All my Chukar hunting Dogs are named Sam in honor of that Plott

So tell me Waldo hunted Coon and Cats very successful with just one Dog for yeas before Tom came along..............................Do a lot of guys hunt with just one Dog?

It can be done, But... Let a old boar coon get one dog in the water and take him under or catch a cat on the ground, a average size cat can run up a vet bill quick. It all can still happen with two or three but less likely. You looking to get back in the game ?

Lots of bobcats in NV. Spent almost 3 years down there working and seen quite a few cats being trapped and along the hwy. You have to be a resident to hunt them.
