Hi From the Great White North

Postby Fargus » Sat Jan 31, 2009 6:27 pm

Hi Everyone,

My name's Craig and I have 3 Catahoulas and a Catahoula/BMC that I use on my cattle and hunt with when I get the chance. Mostly coon, but I have been hog hunting a couple of times. I'd really like to get into hunting coyotes, but haven't had the chance yet. I'm here to learn all I can about running curs on yotes. Great stuff here!

Ammo, my 6 month old

Great looking Catahoulas Craig! Especially Ammo, he looks amazing.
Looks lika they can take som cold too.
Are they open or silent on track? - Just thought it would be a advantage if they were silent on cattle and open on Mr. Coon....

From what I've learned at this forum, you've probably got killer hounds for them bobs Craig.
You say that you like the trait that they are silent on track/put the critters traight up since you are hunting on small areas, but how deep will your Catahoulas go? -When they are tracking, how far will they track, without jumping, before they give up?

You've got a great web site. Lots of info and great pics!

Thanks Hans.

My older dogs are medium to long range, going out 1 or 2 miles to find a track and will run a hot track until they've got something bayed or treed, or until I pull them out, but they're hit and miss on cold tracks (not a big deal for me, I got Catahoulas expecting them to be hot nosed, makes it easier to find bush cattle). I expect Ammo to be a long range dog. She started striking out on her own at about 4 months and it's been a heck of a ride with her ever since.

Those Catahoulas are really growing on me Craig. Didnt think to much of them when I first saw pictures of them, but I must say them grey/black leopardcoloured ones of yours is some of the best looking hounds I've ever seen.

I love to listen to a hound thats open on track, cold trail through the walleys and then go wide open at the jump, but I'm starting to realize that some of the hunting I plan to do with hounds demands some S.W.A.T - team alike action, hounds that will slam down on unexpecting critters and catch them completely off guard.

Thanks for all the info,

Hans
