my hound doesnt bark on the trail...

Just wondering if this is an issue...i only have one hound a little over a year old and he has a great nose from what i know. only been on training scents/ trails so far and will bark treed but does not bark at all during the trail. is there something i can do to fix this? does it matter? I just got an astro so as long as there is a signal i know where he is at.

my thoughts is that he will get more excited once he realizes that all this time he has been trailing a cat and will go crazy the first time he sees one in a tree, but I am new to this and would like some input.

Some dog are just quite on trail, it's not a bad thing as long as you got a signal. Quite dogs are able to get a bit closer to game before it's jumped witch I think is a plus. If he trees I would not worry about it, but thats me. Lance

Sometimes dogs wont bark on drags but open good on real game.Also if it is a young dog and you turn it loose with older dogs they bark trying to keep up.If it is all hound it probably is going to bark plenty.Like LBell said sometimes not barking is a good thing. As long as it will tree you can catch game.Good luck and have fun.Larry

Thanks for the words...I never looked at it as beeing a good thing. also never thought about the ones in the back barking trying to keep up. I did get a good bell for him from lcs that works pretty well, i keep it on him when we go elk hunting becuase he stays tied up back at camp and when i get back for lunch and untie him he'll take off by himself and track my route that i did that morning. It scarred the crap out of me the first time becuase i didnt know what he was doing and he was gone for about 45 minutes (5 miles that took me 5 hours)...came running in from the backside of camp all excited as can be, of course I was pissed that he took off but at the same time pretty proud and could only tie him back up and walk away - at that point if i yelled at him he would be so cunfused. He can do this all while I am very scent contious when i elk hunt and only where my hunting clothes while hunting and use scentaway laundry soaps and the spray...shows how good this stuff actually works, or how good a hounds nose is - either way i am not to keen on throwing my money away on that crap anymore (I still do though...I know every bit helps) Maybe scent-away was trying to save money and i got the batch that was just water...

sounds like you got a dandy dog to me. I used to pride myself on the fact that my dogs never made a peep until it was treed! catch alot more bobbers that way for sure. sneek up on a lion you'll tree him quick! My dogs have since outgrow that quiet trailing especially after I ran bear with them. good luck and have fun. Houndn'em

I have noticed that my young dogs will do that when they are running by themselves. I think it might be a little insecurity, but once they figgure out there is game at the end of the trail, they start barking. It some times just takes awhile, I think. If you run your pup with another dog he is familiar with, he'll probably start babbling for the sheer joy of being a hound. Happy hunting!

Ah heck just let em get a little experience and put em on some real game and im sure you will be surprised. I have a yr old bluetick female..same deal wont open trailing on drag even when made with a real animal but will tree. Now on the other hand when she is trailing real game on her own she is 100% different...Opens every step when the trail gets hot! Just dont worry and let em do they're thing.
