my name is Scott, i recently decided to get into hunting with hounds. I got a couple young pups right now and have started working with them a few times a week. they are only about three months right now but very interested. Just yesterday i took em out and both dogs were on a coon trail and took it right to the tree, not really knowing what they are looking for yet but a good start. I'am very passionate about big game hunting and have been really successfull, i trained the best deer hunting dog i have ever heard of and few excelent bird dogs so i'am not totally a rookie when it comes to dogs. now i have a new challenge...

Does anyone have any suggestions for some training methods on these dogs?

Well welcome to the sport of hounds then, but you'll fnd that training them is a little more challenging than bird dogs. I helped a young man get started several years ago who--like you--had been heavily into bird dogs. After the first couple years he was disappointed that his dogs would still break on trash from time to time and that they didn't finish the tough stuff they started with my dogs.

I think his complaint went like this: "In a week or two I can have a bird dog doing just about anything I want but these damn hounds are different."

I told him training a pack of hounds from the tit to the tree (finished and a lock-down pack) is measured in years not weeks................

Good luck and good huntin,
ike
