Hello, I am new to hunting bear with hounds. My dogs, sons, and I have only been in western North Carolina for 3 seasons, so we still have a lot to learn. We have plotts, walkers & their crosses. I ran cross country in high school and running dogs in these mountains has been more physically demanding in my opinion. I grew up still hunting and putting on deer drives in the Alleghany river hills, this is a totally different sport. We don't own or have access to private property, and there are very few deer in the national forests of Western NC compared to Western PA where I grew up. With 4 sons, I really didn't think it was fair for me to continue deer hunting when we moved south. I remember when I was a kid struggling to sit still and stay quiet for hours in a ground blind. My sons can run, swing on vines, and even sing if they want to and the dogs don't seem to mind at all.
