Re: coatimundi
With all the noise they make while up in a tree they sure can get a young dog all fired up
If they would stay in the tree they might make good training aids...
In my experiance the big troops will stay put but the big solo males don't like to stay in thier trees and will jump out and because they are slow your dogs will catch them. They have 1 inch claws on all 4 feet and they are tough for thier size. They only weigh around 10 lbs maybe 15 if its a big boar. A young inexperianced dog will most likly get torn up very fast if alone.
I don't realy think they are much worse on dogs than a 20-30lb coon but there is really no reason to let dogs run them because they are not worth anything as a fur bearer. They can be big pests on fruit trees and prey on chickens so I do allow my dogs to get rid of them around the orchard.
My dogs mostly my Buddy dog, killed several inside our orchard last year and only had two dogs hurt. One caught a claw in his nose, liky a rear claw, and the other stuck his head into the open jaws of a coati that my Buddy dog was killing
Both healed up in a few weeks without stitches. Buddy seems to know how to avoid the pointy parts but when he was a young pup 6 months old I had to jump in and rescue him.

Re: coatimundi
Picture a cross between a Monkey and a raccoon with about a 2ft tail and thats what a coatimundi looks like. They are only found in SW New Mexico, SE Arizona and Mexico. They travel in troops (herds) ussually and are constantly moving it seems. they are a pretty neat creature but a pain in the a$$ to a lion hunter. Dam hounds love to chase them.
I would avoid letting a hound chase cuz they can cause some stiches. Plus if you hunt where the alot of them you dogs will constantly be after them

Re: coatimundi
I will have to take a better picture next time mine get one to stay in a tree long enough but here is an old picture
Its a mother and two cubs treed on a boulder, there were a few dozen treed all around... this was several years ago. The population took a dive here three years ago, causes of the crash are likly drought and disease. Also a fav snack of mtn lions, three years ago a person had 9 Coati radio collered for a study and they were all eaten by a mtn lion in about a weeks time. They seem to be making a come back now.

Re: coatimundi
My dad treed some, he did, not the dogs lol. Saw them run across the road and took off, they ran up and tree and started making their monkey noises at him.
I'd love to get a bunch of Plotts and chase the hell out of them lol. Same with the Javelinas, I hate them... The 3 S rule applies to those evil little bastards!

Re: coatimundi
Javelinas ripped my Dirty Deed's dog throat up bad... He almost died, Socki got a hair lip and everytime his heart would beat his lip would shoot blood about 6 feet, he lost the most blood, Cabo (RIP) had the most blood on him but not a cut on his body.
They took down the boar and killed it before anyone could get to them, the females charged all the hounds and people, this part was caught on tape. Very entertaining if you have the same sense of humour and adventure as we do lol.
I have never seen a Quadi, but this coming season I'm gonna have my friend take me so I can call one in so I can blast it lol.
There are a few things you should know when camping in places that Quadi's live... Vaughndog can back me up on these:
1.) They will come into camp, eat all dairy products especially cheese, best to not bring it.
2.) They will also steal your left boot if left un-attended. I suggest you lock them up, or sleep in your shoes!

Re: coatimundi
They are both, prolly more nocturnal I guess. All the times my BF and dad saw them it was middle of the day.
From what I have heard there can be a lot in a group, maybe 60 or so?
I'll shoot one and post pix lol
