yea that is how i check my coyote traps but i just tie the string straight to the magnet. it works really well cause you have to keep as much sent out of the area, where your trap is, as possible. so all i do when i get home to check it is flip on the tracking box. hehe.

used this method in Maine on baits several years ago. We had alot of problems with coons pulling the magnets so we took a 1 gallon bucket with bait and suspended it beside the main bait with light fishing line. This way you can determine the size of the bear that you want to be able to pull the bucket down and activate the collar by adjusting the hieght.
