hunting neutered hounds

Wooow, its been a while since Ive been on the sight. Hope all is well with ya all and hunts are good.

Just need to know if having a male hound neutered is going to hurt his hunting ability or agressiveness on the trail. Will this make him less of a hunter cause he may not stay on the trail as long or make him lose interest in treeing whats at the end of trail?

Thanks everyone and hope all's good on the trails.

Robb,
Good question. This is just my pearsonal openion and nothing else. I've actually found it to help alot of dogs out. It cuts alot of BS out and they seem to just want to get down to business. If I know I'm not going to breed a dog I cut them. There's a reason we all don't ride stud horses. The only down side to it is that other uncut males will want to ride them. Not always but sometimes. I do believe if you like the dog and he's giving you any kind of problems you'll solve them by cutting him. Good luck!

It won't hurt him a bit. But,if you hunt him with other males that aren't neutered, expect problems.I don't know why but I've seen it happen SOOOO many times. The uncut males will try to breed him just like he was in heat and it don't take long for the fights to start. If your hunting him with just bitches or all cut males you'd be ok but otherwise I wouldn't do it.Another subject is if your doing it cause he's horny or he's growly, how long has he been that way cause sometimes cutting him will not fix the problem especially the growly part.Sometimes your better off to step back and say maybe I need to fix this problem with a gun instead of a knife. JMHO but as I said I've seen it ALOT.

I agree eith you 100% Travis. Another thing is that after you cut him it takes a little while for the testosterone to leave his body. So don't expect overnight results.

I have some hounds that are cut and some that aren't and the one's that are neutered are definitely less trouble.I don't believe that neutering effects there hunting intensity one bit.I would agree with Travis that uncut dogs will sometimes ride neutered males but in my experience if you kennel those males together or let them spend alot of time together at home, they get bored with that pretty quick.I have never had any hounds that engaged in that behavior for any length of time but then all my dogs live in one common area.

SouthWest,

I thought you quit the game, what happened to you?

Hey, Mike

Noooooooooo Im still around.. just the work BS and all. The real estate market is busted so making time for hunting is tougher since Im having to do other things for $$

Hounds doin great he's a huntin fool. No thanks to me...lol Im a ok trainer but he has raw ability that can make anyone look great. If its four legged he hunts it.. he lives to hunt.

The sucker keeps his nose on tails like a power vac sucking up a trail of saw dust only difference is he is running, snorting and howling as he goes. He cuts a trail and you can hear him snorting to inhale scent then he's lights out in another zone. He becomes a different dog as if someone flipped a switch.

He's a spoiled hound. Plays on 5 fenced acres all day. Hunts trees and roles ferels, kills and partly eats jacks, cottontails. Sleeps in his dog bed at the side of me and my girls bed. He's 60 pounds now 19 months and I keep him very slim. He's just muscular, runs plays all day, and it makes him carry more muscle which makes him heavy.

He has treed coons, treed lions but I need to hunt him more soon as Im able. Luckly, he won't forget how to hunt. I just turn him lose and he has at it.

We still forsure gotta hook-up. Im ready for the rains to come and get him in the woods right after a good rain. How are you dogs doin last time we chatted they where taking care of business..

Neuter all them males you are not planning on breeding, it won't hurt them and like Shorty said after those hormones stabilize you won't have any problems with males that know them. Stange males might still try them now and then but heck you all know strange males will try most anything. LOL! And dogs will too! LOL!

Heck about half of the males we do breed should be neutured as well because far too many dogs are bred based on sentimentality rather than sound logic, science, history and necessity. Oh well I will leave that alone because I have been guilty myself of it at times.

Anyway the aggresion or passion to trail, tree and fight game comes from a different place in the brain than the passion to make breed, fight and piss on every bush in the woods. So as far as hunting goes you will be ahead with spade or neatured dogs if it is game you are wanting to catch.

Also male dogs usually add several useful years to their lives when neutured. Prostate cancer is a real problem in older male hounds and this eliminates that threat.

Once again, Mr. Leonard hammered this nail home!
I agree 100% too many accidental dog breeders out there. The neutered males I've been around are agressive trailers, have manners at the tree, share the kill, and won't pi$$ on my backpack.

Well you fellers are definitly the new breed of hunters, I guess as a young feller i havent experienced too much, but the guys i hang round with are quite a bit older are solve their "bad" dog problems the 'old fashioned way', they shoot em.

One feller put it like this "Why would i pay to have some other man more money than the price of a bullet to fix my dog, i'll 'fix' him myself"
Course these are the same guys who are over 60 and will still start bar fights to have fun, lol.

Just a different breed of man i guess.

Id personally never cut a dog, i'd sell it if i didnt like it, ive had to many dogs and horses, that i regretted cutting, only to find out they were good animals.

Well first af all I'm not going to pay anything to have my dogs cut. I already own a knife so it costs me nothing. As for the dogs you regret cutting, they probably wouldn't have been quite the dog if they had their nuts.
